Sorry, but I cannot find the info. I'm looking for among all of the threads.
I remember reading here awhile back that some people piece together enough privates and sponsor their own visa.
IS ANYONE HERE DOING THIS OR DONE IT IN THE PAST?
I quit my job and really don't want to get another job working for another conversation school. I think I might be able to do better on my own.....maybe??
Do I have to get married?
As always, any advice is appreciated.....especially people who have successfully done this!

If you have worked in Japan on a work visa for at least a year, you can stop using the one employer as your sponsor. "Self-sponsorship" means you get enough PT work (minimum salary varies with immigration office and officer) to support yourself. Private lessons won't count.
Read here for more info.

I'm in the process of doing this, too. I stopped by immigration last week to pick up the paperwork. The only thing they mentioned I needed was the contract from my new primary employer (I'm working several part-time jobs). I don't really have any of the other paperwork, anyway.
So I'm heading back in tomorrow to see if it all works out.
I've heard rumors that you don't need to actually be making that much money anymore. Some people have told me that it's as little as 180,000/a month. Which is right about where I am. |

You can open up your own eikaiwa school as a sole proprietorship by just dropping off the appropriate form at your local city, ward, or town office. As long as you keep good records for tax purposes, you'll be on the level, legally.
Getting a visa which will allow to run your school full-time is not as easy.
There's a post on the subject here: http://www.sevententotokyo.com/start-a-business-in-japan-or-die-trying-sole-proprietorships/ |

I would suggest starting as a sole proprietorship might not be the best rout, liability wise that is. I've heard that registering a company now runs 300k yen. Cheaper than it used to be, but still an added expense, but one that may save you headaches in the future. |
