I just got offered a job at Centro Venezolano Americano in Caracas. I've gone through and read old threads talking about Caracas and Venezuela...most of which don't seem too positive, but I've pretty much decided to take this position so I think I'm going anyways.
Still, any advice on what to expect would be very much appreciated! I realize it'll be polluted, expensive, and there's a lot of crime...but if you've been to Lima before and can try to compare how much better or worse the pollution and crime is in Caracas, that would help give me an idea since I lived in Lima for a while in 2006. Also, if you have any experience with the Centro Venezolano Americano can you give me an idea of how they are to work with? |

I spent almost two years in CCS from '01 to '03. I ABSOLUTELY loved it. I left because the changing political and economic climate just didn't make teaching English profitable. But I would love to go back someday. It's still my favourite city, by far. Don't listen to all of the negative hype. Every city has its problems. If you're smart and follow some basic safety considerations, you'll be alright. |

the school is giving me a monthly stipend of 2,200 bolivares fuertes, plus I get 18 Bs.F's per class I teach...I think I teach 20 classes per week.
I think there is both an official exchange rate and a very different unofficial exchange rate in venezuela...so i'm not exactly sure how that translates into US$, but i think it's something like 2.1-3.5 Bs.F's per dollar. |
