I'm hoping I have this right.
FM3 first, then take care of the tax ID, correct?

How long have you been waiting for your FM3?? Are you working for a school with adults or are you doing an independent FM3?

My wife is Mexican and she said she could see about making me a resident faster since I'm married to her but I'm not sure if that would slow things down for me.

I think I'll just find a school that will get my FM3 for me and then I'll look into the tax ID thing and go from there.

It has taken longer than I had expected to get my FM3 - a little over 5 weeks has passed since my first appointment with the lawyer. I'd better give him a call tomorrow.

I'm working on my own and thus have applied for an FM3 Independiente, which could be why it's taking all this time. Or is this the usual amount of time I should expect to have to wait Confused Question

You could certainly get resident status based on being married to a Mexican, but I'm not sure it would help you get resident status that includes permission to work.

I'm leaving all options on the table, teaching adults, kids (maybe) or an independent FM3.
If you don't mind me asking, how do you go about getting an independent FM3? Short version will be fine. Do you have to show that you have students lined up or just that you have teaching credentials and experience?

To apply for the FM3-I, you have to present your credentials (university diploma(s) and/or TEFL certificate) plus a letter of intent (in my case, supplied by my lawyer) and a copy of your c.v. I may have forgotten something, but these are the most important items. They don't care if you have students ready to go or not.

Sounds like a good backup plan. I've heard that some people make good money doing what you're doing.

My degree was apostilled in March 08. That should be OK, right?

No problem - my degrees were apostilled about three years ago and were accepted by Migracin.

I don't think the original question has been answered clearly, so I'll try a step by step guide to getting aforementioned "ID" (Cdula).

1) First of all, you will effectively be an "independiente", so first step, Go to immigration to change your permission to "profesor de ingls de manera independiente" (o algo as). Hacienda won't do the process without this permission. (This step costs nearly $2000)

2) With your revised FM3 (or FM2), go to Hacienda and apply for status as "Persona Fsica".

Quote:
You have to go to your nearest Hacienda office

Not necessarily!!! We all have an assigned office based on where we live, and this being Mexico, it's not always logical. I live in Delegacin Benito Jurez, but I have to go to Iztacalco - although there is an office nearer, in Col. Del Valle! To find which is your office, go to any, and they will tell you. You might get lucky and find you're already in the right office.

3) You will need: FM2/3 (and copy), Passport (and complete copy) for sure, and I think Proof of address. (Any office will give you these details too).

4) You will need an appointment, which I think you can get on the SAT website, or if your office is near, you can do it there. It may be in as much as 2 weeks later. You will get your cdula (if acceped) in the same appointment.

5) Make many copies of you cdula, (reduce it in size and laminate it as you will have it for a long time).

6) Give a copy to friends and/or family because....

7) You should present it and ask for an invoice anytime you pay IVA...that's ANYTIME. Ignore everyone's advice, too many invoices is better than not enough, and this will lower your tax burden.

Cool Get your recibos printed, if you're in DF and want these, PM me (plug, plug!!)

9) Get an accountant to handle you're monthly declarations - not too expensive and saves a lot of hassle.

I have an interview tomorrow with Berlitz. I'll see how that goes.

Don't worry about the tax ID with Berlitz they do it all for you (the tax fiddle that is). They won't send you anywhere near hacienda.

Thanks Phil_k. I appreciate the info. I may be sending you some PM's in the near future. Don't you have a FM3-I?

Or free of charge if you're married to a Mexican as I just found out. Woohoo! Something free from immigration, apart from their caras de huele pedo!

Is that what I should apply for after the wedding? Or does one of us have to demonstrate a certain level of income?
