I agree 100% with Guy.
However, Canada's universal health care, in Manitoba, and likely similar in all provinces, will only cover only 18 months away from home, and 12 of those months need to be gainfully employed months, with a contract faxed back home as proof.
I've been harping - but - IMHO - ex-pat insurance, although expensive is worth buying.
I think it just might be my largest expense. |
Universal...sounds so comprehensive doesn't it? That's not the case at all. I'm only familiar with Ontario and BC, and neither comes close to 18 months away. You only get 3 to 6 months coverage on those two provinces. Best check with Manitoba gov on it and at that, get yourself some outside-Canada coverage. |

I did have an extensive conversation with Manitoba Health.
I don't know about any other province 6 months outside of province without employment will guarantee coverage to Manitoba citizens when they return to the province.
A Manitoba citizen working outisde of province can be away for 18 months, but proof of employment is required by way of faxing a contract.
The faxing of the contract avoids the 3 month wait period.
People moving to Manitoba will be covered after 3 months.
I will be in B.C. for the month of August and Manitoba Health will cover me during that period. Manitoba Health reimburses B.C. health for medical expenses I may incur.
September onward I'm in New Mexico, then travelling into Mexico. Because I'll be gone for more than 6 months travel insurance will not do.
Ex-pat insurance is not sold here in Manitoba. I'll purchase ex-pat insurance when in Vancouver. It's going to cost a lot of money. |

| Sounds like I'll be moving to Winnipeg when and if I go back as they have the best health coverage in the county it seems. Ontario boots you out after 3 months and BC requires you to pay into their system only if living there. |
