Hello everybody,
I have just read this at Khaleej Times Online :
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Capital boosts salaries in education sector
(WAM)

8 June 2008

ABU DHABI - The Executive Council of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi has approved a financial increase in the additional housing allowance allocated for all UAE nationals and expat staff working in the sector of education in the Abu Dhabi, Al-Ain and Western Education Zones.

The hike was effected in accordance with the directives of President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and Shaikh Mohammad bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and Chairman of Abu Dhabi Education Council.

A close follow-up by Shaikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Presidential Affairs, Deputy Chairman of Abu Dhabi Education Council, also brought this hike into fruition.

The increase is 6000 dirham a month for all staff working in this sector in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. It will be disbursed as housing allowance in order to meet the increasing rents of the rental value in the cities of Abu Dhabi, Al- Ain and the Western Region. This increase is calculated as of June s salary and is disbursed not later than next October.

Dr. Mughir Khamis Al Khaili, the Director General of ADEC stressed that this increase in housing allowance for the staff in this vital sector would waive decrease the burdens on the teachers and administrators of the education zones due to the increase in prices and rents, as well as the high rates that exceed the housing allowance. It will l enable them to provide adequate housing for themselves and their families, thus enhancing the stature of the teacher and all the staff working in the corps of education in the Emirate.

Some 13,000 teachers and administrators in schools and Education Zones will benefit from this increase.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

But does anybody know how much the allowance was before ???

Doubt post-secondary teachers will see any of that. Probably for under-paid k-12 teachers in national schools. Looks like ADEC has a lot to do with this so there is an outside chance that ECAE may benefit from it. I believe they are affiliated with ADEC.

NO secret, but with the continual increase in rents, it's NOTHING...6000 per month is what the amount will be, but people are being thrown out of their homes (if they live in villas), as owners are putting up the prices by extreme amounts. 6000 x 12 = 72000 One can hardly get a 1bdrm flat in Abu Dhabi for that amount. Dubai would be even worse. If one is already getting 70000 plus and they add on the 6000 month, well, that's sure help..but will that actually happen? time will tell...these "schools" or institutes are businesses. Can you say greeeeeeeeeeeeeedyyyyyyy
