The language school in Zhongshan (in between Zhuhai and Guangzhou) I used to work for on and off would only pay 100Y/hour after I quit teaching full-time there. That was years ago. The costs have been steadily going up since, so I told them I couldn't keep teaching unless they'd raise the wages. I could make much more tutoring privately.
I was wondering if any of you not working on a contract work part-time for a training center, and how much they are paying. The training center I used to work for wants to hire me again for some summer classes, but we haven't discussed the pay yet. I was thinking of asking 180 or 200Y. Any idea what the current standard is (particularly Pearl River Delta)?

I will go one better for you. Get a Chinese to ring up the institute in mention and ask how much a class hour costs and how many students are there per class. As a foreign teacher most institutes pay our lot about half the take per class.

Where I work part time I get 100 RMB a class. There are twenty to a class and the students pay 10 RMB a class hour.

When you get into a big city there are cheap institutes and also up market expensive ones. So work on the above.

Hey Joey, when you say "years ago", how many years ? In 1996-99 100 RMB and taxi fare was standard - The big difference then was that there was hours for the picking.
Now it tends to be 150 RMB per hour, excluding taxi fare. Many will disagree with me,but the quantity is not there at all now. As for the...ahhum, quality, it's as good as ever.
ESL schools now seem to be trying different spins to attract customers; one on one, or teeny tiny classes of 3-6 students seem in vogue now.

I worked for several training centers between 2001 and 2006, and they'd all just pay 100. 2 years ago I even had a class for which they made me pay half the fee for the driver, so I ended up making just 85Y/hour.
Anda, I already have a pretty good idea of how much they charge students for FT classes in Zhongshan. I guess it's fair enough if they pay me half of what they make per class. A student of mine asked several training centers if they had any FTs for one-on-one oral English for her son, and they all asked like 260Y, while the teacher probably got 100Y. She was happy to pay me 170Y instead Laughing Which city are you in?
WW, you get 150Y PLUS taxi fare? Not bad. Thanks for the input!

I was the DOS at a language mill in Zhongshan for about a year in '06-'07. Then, and now, the going rate for PT teachers is 100/hour.

standard offer I have had in Beijing is 150 per hr...but the smart money holds out for 250rmb..many I know will not answer the phone for less than 300rmb...I just got 500 for an hour of my time (one shot deal)... with the FT Exodus... prices should go up but only if you demand it...

Not only that, but editing is now paying around 300rmb per 1ooo words...
