I'm applying to a CELTA program in HCMC.

Reading this board I came across a mention of age discrimination at one of the schools there. I'm 37, and clean cut. So I was wondering if I should be concerned about this.

Has anyone had problems with being considered too old?

As for the timing - are teaching jobs available throughout the year or do you really have to catch them at the beginning of September or summer? If I get accepted for the August CELTA I'll be cutting it close for September.

Thanks!

I've taught in Taiwan, Korea and now I'm in Vietnam. I've never seen as many 'old' teachers as here. I'm 40 and I feel young looking at the average teacher in Vn.

I agree with Bart.

In general, Vietnam does not discriminate against older - and older LOOKING - teachers that much. I have known some teachers that were 60+ that had trouble getting hired, but they also looked frail and looked old.

Korea and Taiwan definitely avoid hiring teachers over 50 unless they have to. Many schools there think after about 40-45 an EFL teacher is less fresh, creative, and energetic.

Your age, by the way, is fine. Schools tend to think teachers in their 30s are more reliable than some of the youngins just arriving who like to play, stay out late, and have too many beers.
