This has to be some kind of a joke. Has anyone here under 25 been approved for a Z visa recently? I just have trouble believing this, considering that someone on the "straight and narrow" track would have a master's degree by 24. Then China would proceed to refuse them.

Has China SERIOUSLY banned teachers under 25? If so, it puts a major dent in my plans. Maybe I'll have to teach in Indonesia instead. Hell, with Korea's new TaLK program, even Korea is looking more liberal than this...

They are getting them other places. I was in Chicago Monday getting mine, and two other teachers-to-be were at the Consulate visa office. Fresh out of college and neither had filled out the visa application, had photos taken, etc. Maybe there is a method behind this, if it's a practice?

Yeah, that rumor sounded like a bunch of BS to me. Still, you have to fly back to your home country, right?

If I got a job in China and had them send my passport with the visa in it to the US (let's say DC), maybe my mom (who's near D.C.) could claim it for me. I'm in Korea right now, and there's no way in hell I'm buying a $2,000 plane ticket to go and pick up a passport with a visa in it in the US.

How do you get someone else to pick up your passport at the Chinese embassy on your behalf?

visa services, and most of the airline ticket companies.

In New York City, I usually use one of the small (maybe 4=person office) companies to buy my plane ticket, they are cheapest. Anyways, as part of their service, they will also go to the chinese consulate and do your visa.

I talked with a recruiter today who told me that she had never heard of this age restriction, but they are ABSOLUTELY SERIOUS on going back to your home country to get the visa. She said you cannot send your passport back and have someone else drop it off and pick it up. It MUST be you.

Of course she's just a recruiter, maybe she's wrong or lying. Unfortunately, I'm in Korea right now and don't want to fly back to my home country and then to China -- ridiculous just to get a sticker in my passport!

I, too, suggest using a visa service.

Visas need to be delivered and picked up 'in person'.. can't be done by mail directly with the embassy.. BUT.. a visa service can deliver/pick up for you. In other words, the person applying for the visa doesn't have to be the one who delivers it to the embassy for processing.

The applicant will need to provide all the necessary paperwork such as the completed application, invitation letter, passport, fees, etc. to the visa service. You can do that by UPS.

.

Something you will learn from first hand experience once you're arrived here: an overwhelming majority FAOs will tell you outright lies and make shit up and pass it off as fact rather than tell you they don't know the answer. You should ask them how they "know" so well about matters they probably have never dealt with (these new, confusing visa regulations). I wonder if they're b. s.ing you as they are desperate for a teacher and don't want you to take any risks so they will send you through hoops you might not have to go through just to ensure they have you. If they can't verify things for you and provide facts to back up their claims then they are probably lying to you about many things. Be careful. A pathologically lying FAO can equal a very unpleasant working experience in China. A lazy FAO is the same. It's their job to know what's up regarding such matters, but not every FAO actually takes pride in their work. Some do, but not all.

FAOs will say what they want.

I gave the amount for my airplane fare. Very reasonable (I won't be going home, so I get the cash). The next day, the FAO worker (the person you deal with isn't truly the FAO, the FAO is an older party member who may or may not speak english), the worker said a Beijing copnay offered the round trip ticket for 2,000 RMB less. I asked the FAO worker to send me the details, company and flight.

Guess what! The next day she said my amount was okay and the school would pay me that amount. Who would have thunk it!
