| Of course, there are Saudis who were formerly from countries like Yemen, etc., who may bring the numbers down, but overall, teachers are certainly not impoverished, taking into account the fringe benefits, including free housing. |
Thanks for that piece of information, it is truly enlightening.
I really enjoy your insights into the economic and social complexities of KSA. Only someone, such as yourself, with extensive experience of the country could offer such profound reflections. |

Per capita income can be a very misleading statistic.
EFL teachers are at or near the bottom of the western expat income scale but they still do reasonably well compared to many Saudis,
A lot of Saudis earn only the minimum monthly wage of 1500 sar.
This may have gone up since i left but nonetheless a whole lot of Saudis survive on very meagre incomes.
The rich in saudi have huge amoiunts of money and there is a small middle group but there is a bigger group at the bottom of the money scale and they are significantly worse off than your average western expat EFL teacher. |

Has Ghost set himself up as an expert on KSA? Please show us the evidence, if you have any. |

Evidence? Look back through this thread and others posts by 'ghost'. He is constantly making 'statements' about KSA, the lifestyle and earnings of teachers here, etc. when he clearly does not know what he is talking about (no, a link to Wikipedia doesn't count). A case in point is his telling everyone here that getting a Saudi visa would be a straightforward process.

Is there a minimum wage in KSA?
But yes, it is certainly true that by no means all Saudis are rich, and many are downright poor. However, given that there are many people in the Kingdom - both Saudis and expats - who are far, far wealthier than any ESL teacher, it's just wrong to suppose, as our Korean expert does, that your average roadside fruit and veg vendor is going to see an ESL teacher as a filty rich furrner there for the ripping off. |

Scot is right on this one Ya Sheikh... if you search the Ghost's posts and read about a bit, you will see - the evidence is all freely available. For someone who has never lived there, he does have a tendency to pontificate and even correct those who have spent years there...

Dear Cleopatra,
I'd offered you and Stephen Jones the olive branch (the olive branch being out of context here, since I didn't start the sniping on the "My Middle East Heritage" thread). That was struck down rather quickly, by the mods. In a matter of a couple of hours, really. Wonder what prompted it!
I really don't see what can be accomplished by being abrupt, in replies?
I respect your posts, though they are acerbic at times (It takes all kinds to make the world, doesn't it?). |

Well, officially and on paper, the miminum wage rate for the magic kingdom is around SR1675 /month! But, on ground, the effective minimum wage is much lower than the official one.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_minimum_wages_by_country
I know some Saudis whose wage is not more than SR800 /m !!!!!
And the wage of the 'slaves' of Uncle Bandar is less than SR500 /m !!!
This is the magic kingdom, love it or leave it!

It was instant sainthood that was conferred! Special dispensation to bypass beatification and all that! |

I am prepared to confer INSTANT SAINTHOOD on suitable candidates for a small administrative charge..
This scheme has nothing to do with INDULGENCES as previously offered.
PM me for details of how to transfer the money. This enterprise is not in any way connected with Nigeria or Nigerians. |

Well, Uncle Scot, with the help of God's grace, and the benediction of his holiness, the Pope of the Vatican, I officially confirm that you have been appointed as the Bishop of Dave's ESL Cafe, and you can assign and advocate for the cause of the candidate for a sainthood!
Uncle Bishop Scot, what title will you give for a candidate for sainthood, "Venerable' OR "Blessed"? |
