| Hello... I am a native speaker with a Cambridge CELTA and 14 years verifiable teaching experience in four countries. I have taught children, business, high school, and university, and test preparation. I do not, however, have a BA. Would it be possible to find work here? If so, would a salary of 40k baht a month be unreasonable? If hired by a language school, do they allow their teachers to take on private students? thanks in advance for any information!! |

How did you get a CELTA without a BA? I thought a BA was required to get a CELTA...
You will not be able to teach legally, under current Thai law, without a BA.
This doesn't mean you cant find work. A lot of teachers teach illegally here. Getting the required visa might be harder without a BA, however.

| It's true that the law says that a BA is required, but it seems more than a few people are working legally without one. |

You'll be fine, especially where agencies are involved getting you a job. You'll be stuck doing visa runs every month as you won't be legal, which will mean getting your own health insurance too.
Some jobs say they'll hire you with out a degree. Either way you'll be fine...
Once you won't be waiting/living from month to month from the beginning you don't need to worry. You'll be fine. |

| fyi, these days they will only let you do THREE tourist visa runs. meaning, your 30 day tourist visa stamp you recieve upon arrival, you can only receive 3 consecutive stamps before they will now turn you away. i have spoken with some who have experienced this, and who are no longer in Thailand because of this. be aware, the law now is, you may stay in Thailand for 3 months on these consecutive tourist visas, but after that you will be denied entry. |

It's 3 one month visa runs.
Then go to Laos and get a 2 month tourist visa. This is extendable for one month for 1900B
that's 6 months taken care of then you can start again.
You DONT GET TURNED AWAY. You go and get a tourist visa from the embassy in Laos after your 3 months of visa runs to Cambodia.
3 x visa runs to cambodia every month. (visa on arrival/visa exemption) - about 2000B a time.
then to laos - 2 month tourist visa.
Extend for one month at immigration in Bangkok - 1900 Baht.
Then start the process again. All thanks to visa changes made in Oct 2006.
This is only if you're not legal and haven't organised one year visas before you arrive - a lot easier than after you arrive.
You can also get a double and possibly triple entry 2 month tourist visas in Laos - extend each one and it'll sort you out for 9 months. |

Totally ignore the above post. Its all incorrect.
First........you do NOT need a BA in order to take a CELTA course. As the OP already knows.
Secondly...........you can work legally in Thailand and hold a Work Permit as a teacher with NO degree.
Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok administer a scheme called the Nontaburi Project. In fact they are looking for teachers now. With your experience you will have no problem.
You will be contracted to the University but you will work in government schools in the Nontaburi area of Bangkok. Degree holders receive a salary of 40,000 baht a month with work permit.
Non degree holders receive a salary of 35,000 baht a month, with work permit.
Having the work permit now allows for the extension of stay ( maximum 1 year ). This now means that you can stop doing border runs and simply just report to immigration once every 90 days.
Not having a degree does limit your options somewhat but it is still possible to obtain legal work. You might want to consider doing a distance learning program for a BA with any number of accredited universities from Australia, USA or the UK.
