When I lived in Dalian, I had a number of friends who quickly defected from Another English School (ahem) once they'd gotten a load of that place, and went to Sea Rich. I became friendly with some of their managers (not the CEO) and came close to going there myself.
Few of the defectors seemed happy for long. The pay was good, but the hours were pretty obtrusive and the rules were extremely strict. There was a lot of talk of things being promised but never coming to pass. Most of the defectors did at least stay at Sea Rich and complete their contracts, which is more than they could bear at that other place.
Treatment (strict rules and not honoring agreements) was the most serious problem I heard. This was a couple years ago; it's possible that they've cleaned up their act since then. It seemed to me that the program itself was really fairly sound.
Dalian is just a tough place to find a decent job, it seems. The only school against which I know of no SERIOUS black marks is a small one called Talenty, and I only know of one person who's been there. Beware!

actually, I heard this happened a few weeks ago.
but they have their issues, just like the rest. |

I briefly met an American woman teaching there about a year ago. Her hours were VERY high (but she choose to do extra work to be prepared for her classes). She was putting in 10 to 12 hour days at the school . Other teachers were not putting in these insane hours.
She said the pay was good and the students were a bit hard to take. 18 to 20 year old rich kids who didn't get in to a uni, etc....
Oh, and good location, walking distance to the downtown core. |

gmat, I assume you're referring to Sea Rich rather than Talenty. The Spoiled Rich Kids circuit may be the worst teaching work in all of China...and I am at least somewhat aware of the scope of that statement.
My last 2 jobs have been uni-related and the students are/were an ugly combination- rich and stupid. I'd rather take the kindies than this...but not the horrible, horrible middle-schoolers.
As for a headmaster stealing money...an issue to be sure, but not necessarily an issue foreign teachers need to worry about. The person I knew there was at least happy with the treatment, the curriculum, and the students. Of course, if they fire this headmaster and bring in a weasel who mistreats the teachers.......

Yeah,
MTN I was referring to Sea Rich. I should emphasize that my meeting with the American woman was a very quick chat (30 min) so my info is not very detailed, just my impressions (FWIW). |

I worked at Searich. The only thing I can say is be prepared to work monster hours. Like 9-5 Mon-Friday and maybe a little weekend office work. It is a serious commitment. It is mostly comprised of professional teachers and dress code is also a bit serious, i.e. nice trousers, shirt, at least a tie, and preferably a suit depending on the department.
As for honoring commitments, they are good if you do not cross them. |
