Hello all
Can anyone advise me or direct me towards a decent web page on the copper canyon? I'm looking for prices but all I want is the train ticket, no extra tours or any kind of packages. Just the train ticket from beginning to end. How much would it cost?
I'm on a mexican salary, new teacher salary that is, not the best at the mo.
Once again.. many gracias!! |

If you're going from Los Mochis (and I suggest you do, its got the best views) you can buy your ticket in a hotel there if you're travelling first class, and that's all you need. Or, if you're going second class, you just buy your ticket at the station. I've done it 3 times ( ) and last time I went I just got to the station 30 minutes before it left and bought my ticket then.
I think 1st class was about 5 or 6 hundred pesos (one way) and 2nd about 300, but that was about 6 years ago. Try doing a google for "El Chepe".
One of the highlights is the stop at a place called Divisadero. Great view, and the best gorditas in the entire country. |

There is a webpage that has prices and schedule information:
http://www.chepe.com.mx/
Presumably somewhere on there it tells you where you should get your ticket.
I went through the Copper Canyon region, from Chihuahua to Los Mochis, by motorcycle, and it was one of my most memorable experiences ever. The picture below my name is from Urique, a small village at the bottom of one of the canyons.

I've never done the Copper Canyon thing though I've been wanting to for years! Lozwich, if you decide to go there a 4th time, please consider me as a possible travel companion! |

I plan to hike the Copper Canyon in September. Creel will be the place I plan to stay.
Here's the URL - http://casamargaritas.tripod.com
As well as inexpensive, highly recommended lodging they also offer many excurtions. |

Yes, Margaritas is good, but the tours are available all over the town if you're not into the hostel thing..
Also go and see my pals the 3 amigos http://www.amigotrails.com/index.html for bike hire and stuff. And Norberto for the best horse rides in the universe http://www.ridemexico.com/index.html Tell them I said hi.. I miss them..
M0, that may well happen. A really important part of my life happened there and its definitely one of the places my heart lives. Just thinking of that place takes away any doubts I have about this big change I've got coming up. |

Can one travel the train with four-legged companions? |

I stayed there when I did the Copper Canyon. I thik Creel is the best and easiest option to stop for a few days. |

El Fuerte, and not Los Mochis, is the best place to start if you want to stay in a picturesque little town. The stretch of train ride between Mochis and Fuerte is not very scenic and Fuerte has wonderful taco stands and some nice restaurants. A great side excursion is to disembark the train at Bahuichivo and take a harrowing bus ride down the canyon to Urique and if you happen to do this, there's an incredible hostel there with gardens, lovely dorms (or cabins) and the best views: http://home.comcast.net/~ramsay52/.
Creel is a must stop and, as mentioned, Casa Margarita, which will throw in two free meals a day, is the budget digs in town. You can also arrange an even more harrowing bus ride down to the bottom of the canyon to Batopilas. If you're adventurous, you can hire a guide (ask for Librado or Santiago) and pack mules there to trek to Urique, about three days, but not in the summer when the canyon bottom is an oven. The best time of year for this is in the fall when the canyon is in bloom. You can also hire a bike from Tres Amigos and tour the many oddly shaped rock formations near Creel, or if you're not active, there are bus tours that will do the same. |

3 Amigos do rent cars and have really good maps, but the best places are fairly decent hikes that can make a long days walk. How about bikes? Into those
Oh, and Dixie, I'm not sure about the waggies on the train, but they'd *love* the Copper Canyon! Can you take them on buses? You could go to Chihuahua and get the bus to Creel from there, but then you'd miss the spectacular train ride. |

I can't drive or ride a bike, but my feet are fairly functional, so it looks like I'll be hiking it after the wonderful train ride, which is my main reason for wanting to travel there. |

I am sure they would, which is why I would love to do it! I just hate being in the outdoors without them.
I have taken them on the bus before. Weather conditions is what concerns me the most - too hot or too cold (not control down there obviously).
Also, hate to miss the train view. |
