If the salary is 14 million I remember somewhere (perhaps) that this is usually after tax in Indonesia. But if not what could I expect to take home?

And in 2008/2009 would that offer a good lifestyle. It's outside Jakarta. No housing included. I do like to enjoy myself. I'd like to live in a fairly modern place. Though luckily for me 3 large Bintangs is all I can drink on a night out. I prefer simple but clean restuarants to street food.

It should be Rp14 million after tax. Providing it's a legitimate employer, they will pay the tax directly for you.

Rp14 million will allow you a very comfortable lifestyle, particularly outside Jakarta. If you're single and don't travel overseas every holiday, you could even pocket up to 1/3 of it if you were so inclined.

As a comparison, I live in central Jakarta and budget for roughly Rp14 million/month. This includes; renting an apartment, supporting a wife and children, eating at restaurants daily, going to the movies, interntet connection, live in house maid, gym membership, domestic travelling and surplus beer money for nights out.

You could do a lot more (or a lot less given the limited options) with this amount of money outside Jakarta.

The tax is normally 10% and as mentioned, the employer takes this out separately and not from your salary.

Do try and get a statement of tax from your school, and see if you or the school can get out of paying fiskal. If it's end of contract, then the school pays, but if you head overseas for a holiday mid-contract, you would be asked at the airport to pay fiskal. If you are the among the 2% of workers who pay tax in Indonesia, then you may be exempt. Idea

Don't assume that your employer will pay tax on your behalf. I recently started a job here where for the first time in 3 years I have a tax number (NPWP).

Try asking YOUR employer for your tax code. The results can be amusing.

Are you saying TP that on 14 mill I wont be able to afford to drink 3 beers in a bar a couple of nights a week?

What's your idea of the minimum "good wage" then?
