Well, I personally wish you all the best. Without intending to taint the picture you have so far, just be aware of the deep rooted ethnic, political and race issues that exist there (and will continue to exist throughout your lifetime, I'd guess). The jealousy and animosity between the different races, religions and ethnic groups that exists is often just simmering below the surface and can erupt at any time (like in 1998) and ..... when it does, I wouldn't like to be in your position.
Anway, I really hope all goes well for you. There are, I agree, some wonderful positives but, for me, the negatives above are just too crucial to ignore.
I agree the bad press it gets is not always factual nor just but on the other hand, one does need to look at both sides of the coin especially one is considering retiring there.

PS I do have many contacts there who tell me that not much has changed in terms of economic and social conditions in the 8 years since I left. |

Hi. Thanks for the reality check!!  You are quite right of course, but we happened to be in London the day of the London bombing so we've kind of decided that wherever you are these days, there are few guarantees. We do keep out of politics and religion wherever we go though. You must miss being here very much as it must have been home for you.

Actually, I don't miss it at all except for the odd banter in bahasa and gudang garam filter (alto I do get them delivered every so often).
I was unfortunate to be there when the sh*t hit the fan in '98 and my perception of the country and its people did an abrupt 'about turn'. In my opinion, all that it and its people profess to believe in (pancasila etc) turned out to be an empty can. Anyway, I'm probably bias but I hope I am proved wrong and that you enjoy your time there. Obviously, many do.

Very wise but I hope you're not implying that you never give it any thought or attention as I think that would be unwise.
