...just like the movie, I've found the perfect job. This is to the nay sayers for jobs in Beijing. The details really do make your mouth water. I'll list the good points first, and then the rare not so good ones:

Good points:

The inclusive salary of 10,000 RMB
(This should enable me to return home and put a good down payment on a starter home, and the first few months on car payments)

1500 RMB for rent
(I figure I'll rent two apartments one nearby and the other in a cheaper end of the city-I'll use the rent from the second one for savings. Yahhoooo!)

No money for airfare, but as we all know, the prices are quite competitive right now.

No money for health or dental, but nothing will happen to me, and ehh, if it does that huge salary will more than cover any possible medical emergency.

The groovy retro-salary for overtime from 1995 - 80 RMB per hour (though in retro time taxi fare was included)
I get to wear dress clothes and shoes again! I missed that, having worn casual clothes for years.
Very high tech and expensive decour, and a gym right in the middle of an atrium,so all the students can watch me work-out or have a heart attack (I wonder if there is a shower?)
I get to punch-in and out with a very savvy fingerprint punchclock.

Not so good:

Bus to subway-transfer-transfer again, then line 13,then taxi or walk...about 2-2:30 hours each way (Though with that enormous allotment for housing, I can STILL pay the mortgage and have an apartment in Beijing!)
No sick leave without a doc's note, and then only for 3 days without being docked pay.
If late more than once-docked pay.
Need their permission to work elsewhere(why would I ?)
2000 USD penalty for breaking their contract (maybe, there were a lot of rules)
Only a few hours training, but I'm sure the American woman will be a fountain of instruction and information on education, China, me, and everything else I don't know that I don't know.

Life is friggin good!! Cool Cool Cool Cool Cool Cool Cool Cool Cool Cool Cool Cool

Just curious, but how many hours a week are you working for the 10,000?

Um, my 5,000 a month with all the extras along with approval for my side job with 20 second travel time to my main job and ten minutes to my second job is looking better everyday William. Thanks for making me content! I just wish my massage lady was a bit closer as she is a 25 minute walk away.

If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands!

Life, and our jobs as EFL teachers, are what we make them.

It's how we spend our time between classes that really counts.

Congrats on finding a job that makes you feel, well...like 12 happy cool sunglass faces.

This is not a flame, just my sense of humor.

If it makes you content/satisfied, well then, congratulations on your new job.

I thought I remember somewhere on this forum you saying you were an older person. If that is the case, my thoughts (as an elderly one also) were, when reading the description you posted, that it seemed rather difficult, that it was a low salary for living in Beijing.

Also, at this age, why would you spend all the money and BOTHER dressing up, especially at such a low salary. It is almost not worth it.

I don't understand where you will save any money on that salary, living in Beijing, and thinking you will have savings to put down on high-cost living items in your home country. Also, if you are older, how can one take out a mortgage, etc., at an old age? You would be dead before it would be paid off (would banks give you those loans?).

Also, the double apartments, extra work, etc., all seem like you are making more complications for yourself at an older age.

With respect, I am sending my comments, as these thoughts were on my mind, and I don't quite get your logic.

However, if you are not so old, well then, that changes the basic stuff.

Good luck with it!

Dear namdak,
No, I'm not that old ,in my early fourties.I've been posting on here since it started, and often it was long winded posts, but I don't do that anymore. In all honesty, I feel a bit disgusted and ashamed accepting a low entry level position, but it's just for a few months.I only signed a 6 month contract. These past 3-4 years have taken a tremendous emotional toll on myself. I guess the isolation has been the greatest issue.
Not sure if I will continue with ESL in the future, but I will certainly need a lengthy break from it.I just pray to(insert whatever) that the job's not much worse than the contract... It was tongue in cheek. 1500 RMB towards an apartment, and I stated that I'd get TWO - I doubt I could get one apartment for 1500 RMB Wink and during the Olympics! Rolling Eyes
I just have to mantra myself through the next while.

The split shift is going to be a bugger, as will the insane travel, but I hopefully will keep telling myself I'll have enough cash to leave- Not much more, though.

Well done William!!

Isn't it a great feeling when one get's a 'charge' related to the positive self worth thing! I'm not in China just yet but have a good Chinese Government 'private' highschool position to go to. I upped the minimum salary to your level and got VIP nationwide Accident, Hospital and medical insurance thrown in too.

I'll be on the southern side of Shanghai city centre so I'm pretty happy as I'll be teaching my subject area of Geography to Chinese kids and maybe a few ex-pats too.

Well done mate!

TangWolun.
