I was just wondering how many people met someone while teaching abroad and then got married. I'm a sucker for love stories...especially these kinds. I figured too that this must happen often. Very Happy

I got married while teaching abroad.

On the Mexico Forum it seems like at least half of us are married to locals. Some met here (like me) but some got into EFL teaching because they married a Mexican.

I did too. And never planned on getting married. Came to Peru to finish learning Spanish becuase I wanted to adopt Romanian kids and teach them Spanish in China Smile

Been married two years, and in Peru for nearly four. Will be getting Peruvian citizenship in November. EMLEE; did you ever get Mexican citizenship?

I met my husband in Canada while he was on a work exchange. I came to Chile twice and finally we got married here. Now I am teaching here. I would like to go home to Canada though. Maybe teach people Spanish.

I married a Mexican woman withing the first year of arriving in Mexico. However, this love story doesn't have a good end as we ended up divorcing after 6 years.

I met my husband while teaching in Brazil. However, we decided to begin our lives together in the U.S.
We'd like to go back to Brazil to live in the future - we just don't know when yet.

My husband wasn't my student in Brazil, but he is now. I still teach ESL to adults part time and my husband studies at the same school. I work for Berlitz where their method includes rotating teachers on a constant basis. Consequently, I teach my husband's class once and awhile, but we're very professional about it. Everyone knows that we're married but we don't act like it in the classroom obviously.

I'm another of them!

I fit into the later category - 6 1/2 years in Mexico, and 5 1/2 years happily married.

Unmarried, but met my "significant other" on a TESOL course back when I was starting out.

Had NO IDEA it would still be going on this much later, but it is. Cool!

Best,
Justin

Married a local who was neither a student nor a work colleague, after meeting through a sort of club. Still working well, eight years on.
