I saw a strange news item on Phoenix TV while I was on vacation, and I'm not sure if I understood it or not. I THOUGHT it was about some motorcycle taxi guy who killed a fare and ate her in hot pot. Did that really happen, or is my Chinese worse that I imagined? |

Was that the guy who put the head in the freezer and sold another victim in the market as pork?
Taxi drivers have a fairly bad reputation on Taiwan. Best to be a little careful particularly if you are a woman. |

No, this is a different case! Are cannibal killers run-of-the-mill in Taiwan?
Now that you mention it, I remember reading that the original natives who lived on the island before the Han Chinese came were either cannibals or head-hunters ... |

No cannibals are most certainly not the run of the mill here. This is why this incident received such a large amount of press here.
I think that the incident you are referring to was the motorcycle repair shop guy who killed and partially ate a door to door sales girl. I don't recall the hot pot bit, but it was most certainly very marcabre nontheless. In line with that German guy and the internet thing.
The Taiwan guy was convicted as was an assistant at the shop who was privy to the murder but didn't partake in the meal. |
