This is only for all you football fans out there. I've been trying to find out if any Japanese TV channel will be broadcasting the XXXVIII Superbowl live from Houston, but because my Japanese sucks, I can't seem to find any info on it.
In addition, even if I did, I don't think I'd be able to find out whether I can get that channel or not. I don't have cable or satellite -- just what I can catch from the airwaves.
All I know is that based on time/date conversions, it would be 8:00a.m. on Feb 2 in Japan when the Superbowl happens.
Thanks.... Any advice would be much appreciated. |

It will be on satellite. I'm not sure which network, but ESPN is a fair guess. I'll be going to a superbowl viewing party later that evening--apparently one of the teachers is going to record it, and we will all avoid all contact with media (TV, internet, etc.) all day so as not to see the results beforehand. I'm much more of a baseball person, but what the hell, it only happens once a year. I've got a wee bit of money riding on the game too.

Dear denise,
I hope that "wee bit " is riding on the Patriots; I'd hate to see one of the chronically underpaid EFLers losing any of her hard-earned cash.
Go Pats.

johnslat,
I don't really care who wins the game as I am from Ohio. I just want to see a close and exciting game that goes down to the wire. With that said, I think the Panthers will prevail 21-17.

Dear fat_chris,
How unPATRIOTic of you - um, if you ARE from the USA, that is. Gazing into my crystal ball (no jokes, please), I fear I must tell you that your desires will be thwarted on two points:
1. it will not be a very close game.
2. The Panthers will LOSE
But hey, look on the bright side - now you don't have to waste any time actually watching the game.
Regards,
John |

Armed Forces Radio will be broadcasting the game live, but no Japanese channel will have it live. If I'm wrong about the TV situation. please let me know.
BTW, Panthers 17, Pats 13. |

The set-up for the bet is a bit complex--or at least it hovers just beyond my comprehension. I didn't actually bet on a team; a grid of some sort has been drawn up, and I randomly selected some squares on said grid. At the end of each quarter, the last digit in each team's score (e.g., if it's 17-13, 7 and 3) will be used to find the appropriate square in the grid, and the lucky owner of that square wins.
Is this typical? It's being sorted out by our math teacher--too many numbers involved for me!

Just so you know - you can find an NHK bilingual program list here:
http://www.nhk.or.jp/englishtop/program_list/
and the Japanese ones here if you know what you are doing language wise:
http://www3.nhk.or.jp/hensei/
From that, I got this:
BS1
Colts v Patriots from 7pm Saturday
Eagles v Panthers from 7pm Sunday
Superbowl preview 2:40am and repeated midday Sunday
Superbowl itself is on BS1 from 8am until 11:50 on Monday
Hope you have BS1 or a close friend

I actually bought a BS Tuner just for this reason. The previous post is correct 8am-12pm live on BS1 Monday morning. For everyone without satellite it's rebroadcast Monday night at midnight-2 on channel 4 with all commercials and filler cut out. If you want to see it live and dont have satellite check out a sports bar. I went to the Clubhouse in Shinjuku before I had BS. The owner Gana is a cool Aussie who throws a good party. Starts at 7 am in the morning, I think it was like nomihodai, tabehodai for like 3500 yen. I had to use a sick day to watch it live but it'll be worth it. Go Panthers! (17-13)
Cheers,

I don't subscribe to any special services, but when I flip on the terebi I get channels 1-6, 8-12. I could almost swear that at least on a couple of those, I get "station identifiers" with a voice that says: "Be Essu Wan" and "Be Essu Tu" respectively.
Here's what I know so far:
Ch. 1: NHK
Ch. 2: CNBC Asia
Ch. 3: ??
Ch. 4: ??
Ch. 5: Home Shopping
Ch. 6: ??
Ch. 7: snow (doesn't exist)
Ch. 8: TV Fuji
Ch. 9-12: ?????
Maybe someone can help me fill in the blanks.... Can anyone help me out with the BS-1/BS-2 station identifier references though???
Oh yah... 1 more question.. I think Ch. 4 has a pink king kong climbing a broadcast tower or some silly thing.....
Man, what a confusing mess!
Thanks again everyone! |

BS1 is the satelite channel that shows CNN news and you need a dish to watch CNN and the football etc. BS2 runs on the same frequency as the NHK general channel so you can see the same news on both NHK and BS2.
No idea about the identifiers though.
If you get a WOWOW or a perfect TV you will get all the other satellite channels |

Ok.... Finally got finished with guessing and not knowing, I walked into my realtor's office and asked about it. They gave me these strange looks like: what the heck are you talking about, you henna gaijin? So I phoned a Japanese-speaking friend who translated via keitai and explained to me that I should already have my BS channels as the whole apartment bldg is wired for cable.
So, I kindly explained that I did not get these channels on my TV (which is fairly new) so if they wouldn't mind un-SNAFUing it for me please.... One fellow hopped into a car with me, drove me to my place and figured out my TV settings as well as giving me the entire channel lineup for future reference.
Sometimes, Japanese people can really really go out of their way to help someone -- it can be quite amazing!
Superbowl party is ON!!! |

johnslat,
Naw, the Patriots are a New England thing (I like the old helmets better) and the Patriot Act itself is a crock that is completely un-American.
Actually I like the idea of a team on the fringe of self-destruction rising from the ashes and becoming champions, a la Panthers.
A crystal ball? What does the Missus say about that? (sorry, couldn't resist).
Best wishes,
