|
|
I'd like to do a border run to Panama but don't want to spend a lot of money and, for this time at least, I don't need to see any sights. I just want to find a cheap but safe little hotel in a town not far from the border where I can hang out for a few days before coming back. Any suggestions? |

I don't know what "cheap" means by your standards, but taking the Tica bus to David and staying there for a night is straightforward and relatively cheap (i.e. 25 dollars for the bus plus maybe 15 bucks for a night in David, but I'm not too sure about Panama prices). Alternatively, you can take the border bus to one of the border crossings, walk over and take another bus somewhere and stay there for the night. Should be maybe... 15-20 dollars all in all for the buses.
Don't take my word for it though, I've never been to Panama personally. |

Nicaragua is closer and ergo a bit cheaper and also cheap to stay. But I have not been to either (N or P) yet. Another option is El Salvador-a much longer bus ride. |

Get the direct bus from to Sixaola (a six hour trip) from the Caribe Bus Station. It leaves daily at 6.30 am. Costs $5. When you get to Sixaola walk across the old railway trestle and youre in Panama. The town of Changanola is a 10 minute cab ride away. Cheap hotels there, about $10 per night. If you get adventurous you can take a boat to Bocas and stay there. |

The sixaola trip is probably the easiest and the cheapest. The guards at the border are very relaxed. If you go to Bocas there are plenty of cheap hostels and hotels, just ask or walk around. |
