I'm considering going back to school for a BCLAD to teach high school English in a bilingual setting. I am wondering if the certification would be appropriate to use for Mexico in the event that I don't enjoy teaching high school in the states. I haven't seen this question addressed in the forums, and am curious. Many thanks! |

Im not sure about the degree, but I can tell you from experience that if you dont like teaching high school in the states, then you wont want to in Mexico. Well, the public schools anyway. |

In my opinion, BCLAD would involve a rather large investment of time and money for what you could eventually get out of it teaching preparatoria (high school) in Mexico.
I think California's BCLAD would prepare you well in many ways to teach EFL in Mexico, especially if the particular program you chose provided you the opportunity to do part of it in Mexico. However, if you get the chance to see how most Mexican high schools run their English classes (and how little they pay,) I suspect you'd have second thoughts about seeking a job teaching English in a prepa.
Furthermore, regarding the hiring of foreign teachers to teach English, the better Mexican high schools -- read that better working conditions and better pay -- are moving towards hiring applicants who have advanced degrees such as MA in TESOL.
A final note, keep in mind that the concept of bilingual education in the USA is not the same as bilingual education in Mexico . . . but I'm straying towards a different topic here. |
