I'm leaving Japan after 6 years and I thought I'd post some info for the benefit of others.
Money- I did the wire transfer at the post office. It was 2,500 per transfer. Be sure to bring your local bank's address and the ABA routing code of your local bank.
Shipping- I went with shipmates.jp . They weren't the cheapest but they will ship a cubic meter of stuff regardless of weight. A cubic meter is about the equivalent of 10 large suitcases and it will cost about $600 to send it to the East Coast of the U.S.. They pick it up at your address in Japan and ship it to the port closest to your home. They also have delivery from the port to your foreign address but it's extra. This was the best option for my wife and I since we have a lot of stuff like books and records. They also have English speaking staff.
Sayonara Sale - I posted some stuff on Gaijinpot but I don't recommend it. I was selling stuff dirt cheap and buyers still tried to talk me down. Also I received unrealistic requests like asking me to send a vacuum cleaner, small table and fan to Hiroshima. I ended up selling most of our stuff through word-of-mouth.
Hope that helps! |

Thanks bluefrog
Our departure is still about 9 months off but these are things I'm thinking of now.
Looks like I'm going to have to get creative with my sayonara selling.
Good Luck back home. |

Some good info here. This stuff should be easy to come across, but for some reason I just come across shipping services catering to the US military when I'm searching for ways to ship stuff overseas. |

For selling off your whole life's worth of stuff, try finding a flea market in your city.
When I left Matsuyama, the once a month flea market had tons of people checking it out.
I had a bunch of Giligan Hat wearing bargain hunters asking me "How much?!" before I could get my stuff off the truck.
For Osaka, I know Expo Park has a flea market at least once a month. |

I gotta second Shipmates. All my stuff arrived in one piece. Quite reasonable as well compared to others out there. The staff were good as well. |
