| Thanks for all your answers and sharing your experiences, but it seems instead of clarity I still have the same questions. I don't have insurance here in the States so I can't possibly afford a physical here, so if my school will not accept a physical done six months ago, I'm not sure I'll be able to afford to come to China then quite possibly have to take another exam I have to pay for. I have enough mileage for a "free ticket" but I'm guessing that the school wouldn't reimburse me for airfare, so my funds may not get me there. Hmmm just when I thought the search was over.... |

Hello Gypsy Woman, look some of us here on Dave's might be able to help you but we would need to know what degrees you have and if you have one of the 110 hour English teaching certificates.
Most of the work outside the two big cities pays between four to six thousand RMB per month plus accommodation for 16 class hours a week depending on your paperwork. Some places pay back a one way fare after six months but most pay at the end of the year. I used a credit card to come here two years ago. You would need to leave enough to have someone make minimum payments until you can pay it out in full.
The medical isn't needed to get a z visa but it is needed for the resident visa after you arrive and apply for your resident visa. It should max out at 300 RMB. Most places will pick you up at the airport and many pay all your utilities. So you should get by on about $300 to $400 US for your first month of living including the medical but most places will pay for the medical for you.
Winter however is not far off so expect to have to spend a bit from you first pay here to prepare for it if you work in one of the colder areas of China.
Anyway I wouldn't give up on getting here but most are going to want you here before the beginning of September for the new Semester start. |

I think what you are hearing that it in part depends where you are from. I have not yet heard someone from Canada or US saying they need a medical first. Everyone has said you do not need it.
One way ticket is not a problem. If you are using free miles, then negotiate with the school about what amount they will reimburse you for. Standard at most schools I have worked at, they will offer you the price of the ticket (Usually this happens if you decide not to go home for the summer
Good luck |

Not to sound like a wet blanket, but in my opinion you'd be foolish to come here without enough extra cash on hand to finance an exit strategy should things go south. I'm sure many would echo that sentiment! That being said, do wish you luck, whatever you decide!

To my knowledge, Americans aren't required to bring an X-ray or any other health document. It's done in China. |
My potential employer-to-be told me to bring originals of all my health records or I would have to have the work done in China when I arrive...
FWIW |
I did it the first and second time I came, and, by golly, I was marched down to the public hospital to have it done all over again. A friend is coming to China soon and was told by the travel document service in D.C. that the consulates are not requiring exams. What you'll encounter upon your arrival in China will be something altogether different. |
