Firstly I hope I've posted this in the right forum as I really didn't know where it should go.
I've seen an ad on this site for teaching English via internet to students in Korea. The hourly rate advertised is USD 18-20.
I'm just looking for general feedback about this type of work in general. How many hours per day/week can one expect? Do they accept people with University degrees but without ESL qualifications? Are there any catches?
Any information at all about this would be highly appreciated. Thanks! |

This type of teaching is new and there are several companies doing this.
www.culturelinkonline.com
www.sekai-go.com
www.myngle.com
to name just a few...
Some of the companies require professionally trained teachers (sekaigo) and some accept any warm body (myngle).
Also, there is an organization that is part of an EU funded project with the aim to professionalize this type of teaching as well called LANCELOT School. www.lancelotschool.com
LANCELOT School is a training center for language teachers in virtual classroom technology with head office in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany.
They base their expertise on a European funded development project called LANCELOT (= LANguage learning with CErtified Live Online Teachers) http://www.lancelot.at

This is not new in Japan, but it is also not common. Before NOVA went bankrupt, it offered such a service. Students rented a box which allowed them to make contact with the teacher from home. I think teachers got the same rate of pay as always. Not sure if G-com (NOVA's successor) has continued this practice.
One thing I'd be concerned about is how one gets paid. |

There are tons, though I've never taught with them, mainly because of the scheduling conflicts. |

Payment is usually over PayPal. The pay isn't all that great--I can get more with face to face teaching, but it can supplement one's income. |

DOn't forget that lots of these places take a comission ranging from 10 to 25%. And that there are people willing to work for less than you do. YOu have more competition this way. YOu're probably better off trying to get some privates. |

Globalenglish pay around 20$us and hour plus a little prep time, usually 16-20 hrs per week, pos of doing cover, hrs in blocks. Teaching is on their platform using voice and txt chat, pp slides and you can import/present materials using note pod.
Teaching is conversation based practice.
Nice easy job; won't get you rich but it should help you keep from selling your children.
Paid via cheque or into bank account.
Recruit via tefl.com but they take their time to answer. |

OK thanks all. Will look into it. Not sure if my broadband connection is up to it but seems to pass the requirements. |
