Tomorrow is my last day at work until Feb. 3th, 2009. I don't have internet at home and will be in the US for a lot of the time. I just thought I'd let you know, I'm sure you'll get along just fine without me.

Have a good time and don't let the reverse culture shock hit you too hard!

Enjoy your time back in the States. I know you won't let yourself be seduced by all its rampant materialism. Wink

....that's a cheap shot, you can't classify, categorize, or pigeonhole 260 million people into 2 lines...

in fact, second-hand stores are the hottest craze right now...we have 7 in my 10 square mile town. anti-materialism is actually a current trend in the North now. people have much much less disposable income...

go over to Macy's and you'll see more mannequins than customers

check Toyota sales for the last quarter? i believe they're down 30%, but that doesn't make the news...

Of course, it was. I even included a smirky face in my post to make my point clearer!

....yes, i saw that and understood the joke / sarcasm, etc. however, the joke is about MELEE giving in to Northern materialism, not about materialism itself. it's hard to make a similar joke but maybe here are some examples:

"Hey Pete, you're going to India? Don't eat too much curry."

"Hey Martha, i didn't know you were in Kabul? What were you doing, joining an insurgent group?"

"Hey Tim, you'll be in Moscow next week? Take it easy on the vodka!"

...you can't characterize an entire nation wherever it may be in a 2 line statement.

i won't disagree that materialism exists in Western society, US, etc...materialism is a very broad term and can't be compared side by side with different nations.

take for example a $2000 / mo family of 3 in the US: maybe they spend 80% on expenses, 10% on college savings, and 10% at Walmart, Lowes, etc each month. yes, they are spending $200 / mo on materialistic things like paper towels, new vacuums, etc and that is probably more than the average household income in Mexico. but, it's still only 10% of total househould gross income.

take for example a family in Mexico earning $200 / mo. maybe they spend 80% on expenses, 10% for woman's clothes, and 10% he spends on BEER.

should we then call all Mexicans alcoholics because they spend 10% of their income on BEER?

So I kind of enjoyed John's post...

but, hey, happy holidays, MELEE!

I'll be curious how the children experience the States.
