Posted: Thu Jul 24, 2008 10:28 pm Post subject: A few questions regarding employment in China. |
|
|
Greetings all,
I am a dirt poor, though highly self-educated person. It is not through life mismanagement, or any other poor life choices, though being born to a poor family, in a place where the educational system was severely lacking. English is my first language, I enjoy reading, I enjoy writing. I have taught English for three years to exchange students and immigrants through ads in the paper. (I've never claimed to have a degree, and I was always paid in cash per lesson. I've never gouged or cheated. I simply... like to teach.)
I have a desire to teach, but I've never had the money to get a degree. I've never had the money to get a GED either. (Yes, $25 is too much for me.)
I have been studying these forums for awhile now, as well as the culture and cost of living in China. I have been over several informational guides, such as the one at middlekingdomlife.com.
I want desperately to have a change of life. I want desperately to teach, yet will never be able to afford a degree. I am used to living without food for days, and am used to constantly being on the brink of homelessness. To simply put it - my life cannot get any worse.
That being said, I have a few questions regarding employment in China as an ESL teacher;
1. Is it possible for the teaching job to buy my ticket for me, rather than them offering a reimbursement?
2. With 3 years of teaching experience of nothing but foreigners to the United States, will I be able to get a job regardless of my lack of a degree?
3. Will my standard of life in China be any better than my current situation in the United States?
4. I plan to wait till after the olympics, and save what little I can to bring with me should I get a job teaching in China - Is $200USD enough to keep afloat for a bit if all goes wrong?
5. Will they be willing to pay my medical exams on-site? (ie; be able to hand the cash over when the doctor asks for it.)
6. How much can I expect to make in an outlying area from Shanghai? I was hoping to get a job for an untaxable salary in a cleaner part of Henan, or a less polluted and industrial place (Climate means nothing to me. I have moved all over the country here for work, I've frozen my knickers off, and have melted in the Arizona sun.) (4800 RMBs per month)
7. As a Marxist, will I be in heaven? (Not quite a serious question, but feel free to answer if you wish.)
8. If I explain my dedication, and the fact that I actually have learned conversational mandarin through free courses and personal study and resources over the years, will it help? (I really want to teach, I love it, and I just can't continue to live off of teaching under the table, and what meager money I make in other jobs with the current economy in the United States.)
Keep in mind that what grammar I lack at the moment, I am constantly trying to improve upon and should be 100% by the time I start applying for jobs.
I have not been able to teach for awhile due to my mother becoming terminally ill, and having to take care of her for the past five years. During which, I did happen to pick up alot of medical training for the express purpose of taking care of her, including emergancy.
I assure you, what grammar I am currently lacking is being brushed up on even as I write this post. (I have Dave's very helpful grammar lessons up in another window for study.) |

Personally with the way that you write I can't understand why you haven't made better money in the US.
There are jobs here where you can earn a basic income without a degree however how long these positions last is another question. Many institutes will manufacture a false degree so they can employ you but such jobs are in the more out of the way places. Being in close to a place like Shanghai is out as many qualified foreigners are applying for such locations.
There is nothing to stop you from studying by distance education with an Asian university cheaply and getting a degree once you are here.
You will have to come up with the airfare but that shouldn't be such a problem for you if you are used to living poorly so you should be able to save. To be honest you come across as a fake! |

I assure you, I am no fake. If you really do not believe me I could show you the exact amount of money in my bank account via screenshot (with important bits blacked out).
Thank you for the information. It's too bad about the airfare, I guess I'll try to save and put my availability during an off-season. |

I am sorry for the double post, would anyone happen to have any links to sites that give lower airfare than the mainstream? I need to find out how much I will need to save in the coming months. |

Dude you sound like you have a genuine desire to go to china...
I can recommend that you hook up with an English training center as they often do not care care if you are degreed or even over 21...
You need to get a visa, have a passport, and pay your own ticket. These cost money. $200 won't get you far.
You can sometimes find companies /schools that will give you a ticket to come over but you have to work and find the right place.
Keep in mind that most schools will not pay you for over a month so be prepared to have some $ to eat. Look for a job that offers you some free meals everyday
DO some serious searching and put your resume on as many job sites as you can find.
Forget about close to shanghai - too cold in the winter. Concentrate on the southern areas like Zhuhui or Shenzhen where you can get away with dressing in lighter clothes, thus cutting down on the articles you need to carry.
As far as degrees go... if you don't have one then - as my exwife used to do... fake it. No one really cares. Many schools want an English speaker who can read from a book and talk to the students... A friend of mine made his own and got a job with a major english training chain. Another friend was 19 years old, just finished high school, and got a job at a training school and made the same salary as everyone else. He was white and spoke English...
There are plenty of web sites to get cheap airfares... but cheap is still $900 so try hard to get a ticket upfront from a school.
I once got a school to fly me over there to work. They purchased a ticket for me both ways.
So look hard. Also if you are short on cash then consider multiple hops... ie fly to guam, to korea, to hong kong etc... instead of a direct flight. |

So far I've found a post office within walking distance that will do the total package (Passport Book and Photo) for $115. There is also a One-Stop Career Center that may have a scanner for me to get my passport scanned to the internet. I am hoping a scanned passport will be viable for my required "color photo".
I plan to save up for the next two months to get that. I also have found that $900 ticket thing. I will try to find a job that will fly me over there. I'm old enough for a Z-visa as of September. (After the age has been brought up to 25 recently.) I will try to find a route to China that is cheap.
So I guess it's just more saving, while knocking on wood like a woodpecker to get a lucky break and a teaching job that will buy my ticket for me.
I've also made sure to keep everything to a minimum in my simulated contract. I won't ask for much, and be willing to work a bit harder than my salary, if they plan to fly me over.
Poster EDIT: As for the faking the degree... I kind of want to present myself honestly in my resume. If the school must fake my degree or use Guanxi to get me in there, so be it, but I won't lie to my employers. |

So far I've gotten down to a 3333 RMB flight and a 90 RMB plane ride. I cannot find the cost of the train from Hong Kong into Shanghai. I'm using that as a reference point. But I think I will be able to negotiate my flight being paid if it's only 3333 RMB. (I will pay the plane/train from Hong Kong myself.)
My question about the medical exam is - Will they pay it for me, or reimburse? If it's reimburse, how much will it cost me for the exam? So far I've seen 500 - 1000 RMB, with rare occurrences of it being more expensive.
I think I can eat in the canteen for the first month, and it should be easy to negotiate. I can spend the money I bring with me on water for the cooler (Coconut Palm) and some green vegetables. Maybe some soy product for protein. |

Don't stress over the medical. not all schools make you get one.
What state are you leaving from by the way?
Train to shanghai is - at a guess - about 300 rmb for cattle class. Also there are plenty of buses that do the same route. Either way its about a 24 hour ride... |

New Jersey. Home of the Sopranos. As for the medical exam thing, I'd rather go in with enough money to cover it. Even though getting a Z-visa into the country means the job is waiting, I am unsure what happens if they say you need a medical and you don't have enough for it. Not to mention the total embarassment. If $200 - $250 covers it, I'll be fine. As for the train, it looks like flying will be cheaper. There seem to be daily flights from Hong Kong into China at 90 RMB, 4 to 6 times a day. |

Huh...?
By the way if you enter via hong kong it is usually cheaper to go to the Shenzhen airport to connect to other major chinese cities.
90 rmb to fly...? look closer man....

I'm not from Jersey, I'm just stuck here atm. The train seems to be the best bet. I guess it'll take 4 months to save up if they foot the bill for the plane, six - eight months if they do not, and I sell every bodily fluid I have. |

Yulin is a small city in northern Chinas Shaanxi Province with lots of history. It's right below Inner Mongolia and just west of the Yellow River, one of the most famous rivers in China. Here and in nearby cities, you can see parts of the REAL Great Wall unlike the rebuilt portions that you will find near Beijing. We also have the beautiful Red Stone Gorge, a place which can only be described as a Buddhist temple carved into stone cliffs hugging a river. Less than a days travel to the south is Xian, the capital of Shaanxi, well known throughout the world as the home of the Terra Cotta Warriors. Less than a days travel to the north lies the (disputed) resting place of Ghengis Khan. Yulins unique location provides access to a range of interesting cultures, including the Mongolians from the grasslands to the north and the Muslims from the desert lands to the east. The most interesting addition may be you. Many people here have never seen non-Chinese people before, and if the prospect of being somewhat famous appeals to you, then this is the place to be.
There are many places to go and things to do in your leisure time. There are reservoirs to swim in and places to camp as well as bars, discos, and karaoke bars for those interested in night life. As for the weather, here there are four distinct seasons. The summers are hot, and the winters are cold. Fall and spring are just right.
At our school, Open English, we try to provide a relaxed environment for students and teachers both. At many schools in China, there is overwhelming pressure on the students to excel, which leads not only to stress and potential cheating among the students, but also ultimately does them the great disservice of distorting their priorities so that they are more interested in getting good grades than in learning. Here, the students have no homework, no tests, and no grades. And it works. The students want to learn English so that they can communicate with you in class and with their fellow classmates, so they study on their own, free from the pressure of you telling them to. The teachers are also under less pressure than you will find at other schools. Other schools may monitor your whereabouts (whether you know it or not), check your email, etc. You may find yourseld in a school with bars on the windows and motion detectors in the hallways no joke. But not here. Here, your free time is your free time, and you are free to do as you please, with the assumption that you have the good sense to keep yourself from neglecting your duties and out of jail. Also, unlike other schools, we trust you to be prepared for your classes. Other schools will demand to inspect your lesson plans before you conduct your lessons, which can be intimidating for new teachers and simply annoying for seasoned ones. You are also encouraged to use your own style and to experiment with different strategies if you so desire, and the more you prove successful in this aspect, the more you will be allowed to fly solo, as it were. Only when something you try falls flat on its face will you be given advice about how to better reach the students. And of course, at any time, you can ask for advice if you are unsure about how to teach something. We have a very good training system for those who may be new to teaching, which of course would be of no charge to you.
Students are usually between the ages of five and 15, and classes are no more than 20 students (although if you sign a full-time, year-long contract, a few times a week, you may be teach larger classes).
We try to have fun as much as possible. We often go camping, hiking, fishing, swimming, skiing, skating, and have picnics with the students, and you are welcome to join us in these activities although you are under no obligation to do so.
We are a well-established, certified English training school capable of providing a Z (working) visa and a stable environment. We have been growing for several years now and expect to continue to grow. We hope you can join us.
Qualifications
We require:
Native speakers of English
Nationalities preferred are American, Canadian, English, Scottish, Irish, Welsh, Australian and New Zealander.
A bachelors degree is preferred, but we realize that there are many capable teachers who are looking to take a year off from college or before college, etc. Experience is preferred, but we know everyone has to start somewhere, and we dont want to overlook a potentially great teacher who is just beginning only to get a mediocre one with experience. The most important thing is that you have faith in yourself and the will to improve. By the way, we place a great deal of emphasis on pronunciation, so you will be asked to take part in a phone interview, the purpose of which solely is to hear your accent. If by listening to you we can tell that you are from one of these countries, you will already be high up on the list of candidates.
We are looking for teachers who can start sometime between now and October, but if you must start later than that, you are still encouraged to contact us. Contracts are typically for one year, and can be renewed upon completion.
Salary and benefits:
Salary: 4,500-5,000 RMB for 80 working hours per month
40 days paid vacation per year
Accommodation: a furnished apartment with a bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, living room, computer, DVD, TV, washing machine, refrigerator, hot water, etc.
Motorcycle or scooter: We offer a motorcycle or a scooter. We can help you get car license if you buy a used car (about 10,000 RMB). When you finish your contract, you can sell it back to the school at 70% of the buying price.
Airfares are reimbursed up to 8,000 RMB upon completion of a full years contract, 4,000 RMB for one semester.
 Internet access in the apartment,
Electricity, gas, Internet, and water are free.
Airport pick up (Xi'an or Beijing).
Working visa and residence permit in China is provided as well as Foreign Experts Certificate if you have a bachelors degree
 Medical insurance
To apply for a teaching position, please send your resume and a photocopy of your passport along with a brief introduction, which you can send in the body of your email. Please remember to include your phone number in your email. |

"As a Marxist, will I be in heaven?" -- Seska
More like hell. While China is still nominally communist, in practice it is more like Hong Kong-style capitalism. Actually, Hong Kong has had to implement a policy of cash up front for pregnant Mainlanders to prevent them taking advantage of that socialist paradise's hospitals. In Mainland hospitals, those needing urgent care may just be left to die on the street if they can't come up with the scratch. In light of this, I would seriously advise you to rethink some of your assumptions about working in China. While there are undoubtedly many down-on-their-luck English speakers who find a safe harbor in China, it is not necessarily the best place for those without any resources whatsoever. Not $200, but $2,000, would be a more realistic margin in the event all goes wrong.
