Just buy a cheap pre-paid phone here like Telcel Amigo. You can get going for as little as $300 or $400 pesos ($30-40USD). Then you can buy airtime as you go for as little as $30 pesos at at time. |

And with one of those cheap phones, the price includes $300 (pesos) deferred airtime, so the phone itself is nearly free.
It's very easy to buy a phone in Mexico. They are for sale everywhere. Whether you buy it at a little hole-in-the-wall shop or the electronic department of a big store, any given model will be the same kit at the same price. |

Invest in a more expensive one if you can afford to, it's so worth it. Those cheap phones don't last. I have a cheap phone and the quality sucks. I sometimes can't hear when people call me. The last one I had didn't even last 6 months. There's a saying here: lo barato sale caro. |

I'm not sure about European phones, but I got my phone that I had in the US "unlocked", then bought a new chip/SIM card (if I remember correctly it's called a chip in Mexico and a SIM card in the states) for it in Mexico and it's been working just dandy for 2 years now. So I think it'd be worth looking into if your europhone has a chip, and seeing if you could go that route. |

I have a Motorola V3 that I bought in the US, unlocked in Spain, used with SIM cards from Spain and Italy, then took to Mexico and used with a TelCel SIM, and now use in the US with a prepaid T-mobile (US) SIM card. If your phone is a quad-band GSM phone and it's unlocked, you can use it practically anywhere on Earth.
I don't recommend buying a cheapie from Telcel unless you really don't have any other options. Unlocking an existing, quality phone only costs about $100 pesos, you can use it anywhere, and it will last longer than the ones they give away. |

In May I bought the next to cheapest Tel-Cel model and so far it's worked just fine. I hope it doesn't conk out on me in the near future.
TLWH, thanks for the cute saying; I'll keep it in mind the next time I go shopping. |

My Tel Cell cheapie is still working after 3 years, after being dropped dozens of times. True, it is ugly, and has no cool features. |

Mine is kind of cute in a minimalist way, but it's true it doesn't have any cool features. I love it anyway! |

I've had my $350 peso chepo model for over a year now. No problems. It has a soccer game on it that I can't for the life of me figure out how to play.
I'd had a swanky expensive model that promptly broke. It was under warranty but the same issue came up again. I don't have time to worry about an expensive phone or to wait while it's being repaired. |

Im all for the cheapies. Am getting by fine with my 400 peso model right now. One other reason though is past experience of having not one two lifted from me while in Thailand, one while which was pulled from my belt pouch on the Skytrain in Bangkok; the second taken along with a digital camera from my daypack while I was playing tourist. So just having something functional but inexpensive suits me just fine. One thing I do is have a wrist strap thats big enough that I wear it around my neck and inside my shirt when traveling around. Keeps my hands and pockets free, and I wont set the phone down down and space it out.
I have also found the alarm and countdown timer accessories useful in the classroom. Have on several occasions found myself teaching in a classroom without a clock.

Mine cost only 300 pesos (and this included 300 pesos of calling time). I use the alarm clock function all the time to wake up in the morning; it's easier to set than my alarm clock! And I use the calculator to figure out how much money I've been losing lately when withdrawing money from my US dollar bank account . |
