Hey guys.
In about a year I'll have to travel to China to complete my diploma. I already have a degree and a CELTA and have been working as an English teacher for a while now. My question is the legality / possibility regarding working in China whilst there to study.
I'm not sure how long I'd be there, I was told one semester so I doubt it'd be much longer (if at all) than 6 months. |

Working on an F visa (ie being paid by a Chinese employer) is illegal. |

I think the olympic security measures helped to thin that herd a bit. Incidentally, are there any language center teachers in Wenzhou, Zhejiang province who aren't working on an F visa? Outside of those working in universities I've yet to meet a FT who living there that had an actual Z visa and residence permit. Web English are big frauds on that front. |

It's not that uncommon for students to pick up some work but it's not legal so if you're caught you're caught. Penalty? Who knows? Depends where you are and the amount of influence you can muster. |

Sure, I have a Z/RP. And since it's all printed in Chinese, I will always claim ignorance if anyone comes snooping. Not that that would do me any good... |

Sam, you are part of the "few" I know of, but you're not working for Web. I have yet to meet a Web FT from that city with a legit visa. |

Hahaha...
And your point is?
Fact is, more folks have worked and do work on F visas than Z visas. (and if you throw in L visas and X visas it's a blow-out) |

You may find it amusing, but there are many who have fallen foul of the stringent application of visa rules in Beijing over the last few months. Many are now waiting back in their home country for a Z visa to get back to China, because their L and F visas were revoked/ or the renewal or extension was refused.
I suspect similar hoops will be in place in 2010 for the World Expo in Shanghai. |

Go to China on an F visa is not advisable unless you are independantly wealthy and can afford the numerous HK Runs you will need.
You cant get extensions, convert it in China, Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, etc.. You can only go to hong kong and get a 30 days L Visa. Every 30 days and there is no same day service right now, it takes 3-4 days in HK.
I doubt it is going to change after the olympics.
Anyone who tells you otherwise is typing from their home country. |

I am typing from my home country (UK), but did have my F visa extended in May, without leaving China.
My roomate, left Hainan on his F visa on July 1st, he has since had it extended in Yangshuo, again without leaving China.
I would guess, that as is normal in China....it all depends on where you are, and who handles your visa application... |

What I found amusing was your stern-faced response.
I don't find it amusing that many have had their lifes turned upside down. |
