In the next several months I am going to teach overseas (Japan or China.)

I figured that I should take the GRE just in case I decided to go to grad school upon my return to the US. But if I sign up for it, I'll only have about a month or two to study - and I've heard it's really difficult.

With grad programs in any number of areas increasingly requiring this test of their applicants, how common is it for them to make an exception for expat Americans who plan to return and have not taken the test?

I took it a while back--1997, I think. I know there have been changes since then--most notably its computerization--but one thing that hopefully hasn't changed is how long your scores will last. They should be valid for five years, so you can take the test and then take plenty of time to decide where/when to go to school. I did that--took the GRE before heading out to Prague--and then I applied to schools while I was in Prague.
