That could get you a nice enough place, don't take the first apt. you see..

If you want to find out about the city life there, try www.shenzhenstuff.com

Yes. I pay less than half of that for a one bedroom in Meilin - About 3km North of downtown.

The cheapest places near the subway line are probably to be found in Gangxia, Bai Shi Zhou, and the areas north and east of Dongmen.

The standard you should be aiming at in these areas is around 2500/month for a studio apartment, 3000 for a 1 bedroom, and 3500 for a two bedroom.

...and what the previous posters said is very important - prices seem to vary a lot, so worth spending a bit of time looking round. The agencies will be happy to show you around free of charge.

It is worth pointing out that the initial payment is quite large. The standard is 2 months rent deposit, first month up front, and half a months' rent to the agency (if you use one).

Hi, Mandu...and others.
Thank you very much for the information you gave me about rental in Shenzen. I took down Mandu's referred number.

1. But do you think, the school should help me find an apartment??
2. If the first payment is large, do you mean that I should be bringing in a large amount of money, too? If it is two months or so advanced rental, that would mean that at 2,500RMB/mo for a studio, I should have around prepare $1,500 with me?? from my pocket??

I look forward to getting a studio only and around some people who speak English. I am a Filipino, but since I've lived in the U.S. for 6 years, I can be quite comfortable being with Americans..I pray they will, too..

Thanks,..

If you plan to rent a apt for 2500RMB i think you should be prepared to pay 9.500RMB for your first payment.. evrytime i have rented a new place i paid 3 months rent plus a 2000 or 3000RMB deposit might be different in SZ. I didnt realize how expensive an apt is in SZ I pay 900RMB for a massive 2 bedroom place in Wuhan, granted its a little old and ugly but a little TLC helped, the location is good too 2 min walk to the city train.

HI!
Finally I am now in Shenzhen and living comfortably in this beautiful apartment at 3,200 RMB plus maintenance of 170RMB. Now I would like to share notes with other teachers my age 58 or so years old. I am handling children between 2-3 years old..

Please feel free to contact me here or at [email protected].

Thanks.

Glad you got there and found a good place.

May I ask what was the total amount you had to pay initially?

In HangZhou paying rent at 6 monthly intervals is common, maybe even the norm. "I feel like I'm on crazy pills" paying this far in advance. I still have 3 months to go in my 1 year contract and I have to tell the landlord now if I want to renew (that was on the contract <in Chinese>, but I hadn't really remembered), but I've only just started looking for another job and there's no certainty until I get one whether I'll be here for a further 6 months!

I was talking to a brick wall for a while there and she was only going to give me a few extra days. Luckily she must have talked to her son in law and after a while she called me back and said I should let her know in 3 weeks...

I also tried to broach the idea that if I do stay that I would like to change to month by month, or two monthly, rent payments... she wasn't having any of that. She said she wants someone to stay a long time (i.e. a 6 month contract). I couldn't get her to understand that since I would have already been here a year by then that an extra month would make my total 13 months, then 14 months, etc....

BTW, the apartment is in a location where she could advertise it and in the next week 50 people would come all wanting to rent it.

I think the Chinese education system has lacked, and still lacks, anything in the way of logic, analysis or critical thinking... It's one track all the way.

Sorry, to digress...

LFA
