If you work somewhere that has them, they have usually been written by your fellow teachers over the years... or perhaps brought in from outside in some of the new places.
Happy? Normally you just deal with them, don't you? Suggestions for change in them are normally best kept to yourself until you have sussed out when and if management wants to know... if you get my drift.

Good Luck! The best approach here on the board is just to do some searches and read lots of posts. Content areas work differently than EFL departments which are normally much bigger and more bureaucratic.
If you are a newbie both to this board and to the Middle East, take care that what you say here might not be misunderstood by employers - many of whom monitor this board. Also take care what topics you introduce if you haven't worked in Islamic cultures before.
Watch out for the cultural land mines. Enjoy!
