Look at all of your documents that the school gave you very, very carefully. Where does the letter of invitation or whatever state that you obtain your visa? Does it say Hong Kong? some Chinese Consulate in the States? Australia? etc., etc.
I am sorry that I don't have a firm answer for you here. You are the first person that I know since the g*mes are actually on that is going to apply for a Z visa out-of-country, in particular in Hong Kong. The others that I have known have applied at Chinese Consulates in their respective home countries.
Arioch36 put up a really good post about the Z visa situation where he is...it was recent, you may wish to try to locate the post. Others on this Board, I have believe, have also received Z visas recently.

Very important to be certain your invitation letter from the school instructs you to apply specifically in HK. This was stated to our FAO by an official from the PSB.

Dear Mr.
With great pleasure I would like to invite you to be an English teacher at XXXXXXXXXXXXX. Because you are now currently in mainland China, I would expect you to take all the necessary documents to Hong Kong, and have your Z Visa issued there. Because we need to complete a number of things prior to your beginning classes I would hope you can get everything completed, and arrive in Xi`an by the 20th of August, or at least by the end of the month, in order to begin teaching classes on September 1st, the beginning of the new semester.
We are looking forward to meeting you again soon, and having you join our staff.
With best regards.

This is what the invitation letter from our FAO stated.
Hope this helps!
Zhuhao,
Shawn |

If the invitation letter is not specifically addressed to the consulate in Hong Kong, you won't have any luck my friend. |

hey thanks for the info everyone ... I just sent a text to my school, telling them what the letter needs to read. i have been on vacation for the last 2 months so i haven't read the letter myself. they have someone meeting me in ShenZhen with the letter, and they tell me it has the right wording. fingers crossed it will work out. |
