| The principle of fans is that moving air feels cooler than still air, even at the same temperature, otherwise no-one would ever use them! You do have to be sitting within range of it though. Given no air-con, I would far rather have a fan than no fan. Couldn't live without a/c now though, I'm not tough enough any more! |

I'll spell it out for you real simple like. I have a baby daughter that often cries loudly at night. I was suggesting that after a week or so of my darlings repeated outbursts the next door neighbor might welcome a bit of guitar strumming for a change. The beauty of this plan is that the little one is zenzen kawaiiiii so no one would seriously complain about her.

Don't worry about Miyazaki. I have noticed his behaviour on this site and it seems he just likes to behave like a w*****. He's just trolling, that's all. |

It does this because it removes some of the moisture and heat rising from your skin (hence the wind chill factor). My point was, when it is 35 C and the humidity is hovering around 85%, a fan's influence is negligible on most people.
And I'm not tough enough either, never have been. I guess being born in the desert did do something to my body chemistry. Excessive humidity just doesn't agree with it.
Anyway, the OP's bigger problem seems to be making noise that his neighbor likes to complain about. Hey, maybe a nice noisy fan would solve both problems at once ! |

I use a fan everyday and set it six inches away from my body. It works well.
On a sort of related note, I recently went camping, only to come home with a gazillion mosquito and other insect bites. I used common Muhi cream and slathered it all over my body. I sat in front of my fan and the blowing air on the cream activated such a chilling effect that I thought I might freeze to death. The OPs heat problem is solved. |

Oh my God! Have you not heard of fan death! You must be very careful especially making sure you don't go to sleep in front of a fan. |

I still keep hearing about that, even though I retell my wife the same story of growing up with a fan blowing on me every night for every summer. At that time Connecticut didn't get that many humid days (and not even that many nights), so using a fan was practical and cheaper.
Here, even on the nights I want to us one (which is not very often, but I suppose tonight would be suitable), my wife is worried that the 'newer' fans will catch fire, neglecting to remember that the fans I used growing up were probably a lot more dangerous than what we're using now.
By the way, we haven't heard from the OP recently; our fan stories have probably put him to sleep until the landlord or the agency calls him again . |

Thread has taken an interesting twist
In regards to the heat, the reason is sucks is I just recently moved in and haven't bought an aircon yet. The place didn't come with one.
One a good note, she has now started to come to my door to complain directly The divider between our verandas has a good 6 inch gap from the ground to the bottom of it. Last night at 11:30 she deemed it necessary to inform me that she didn't like seeing the the first 6 inches of my garbage bins from her side. All I could do was shake my head. |

Your neighbor is a nut. Before telling her to piss off, however, I'd try to get her to put her insanity in writing. |

| She's really beating around the bush isn't she? ... can't she just say she doesn't want a foreigner living near her and you closing the door in her face? It's gonna end at that, watch. |

Really! And did you tell her you didn't like hearing about it as you started kicking the divider between your balconies?!

Or on an audio recording. And I thought I had problems... |

Good idea. Try to get a few of these when she is picking on you for the slightest things and then tell your real esate company. Maybe the reason why she is complaining to you directly now is because she knows just how idiotic she would sound if she continued lodging complaints about the slighest things and how they would eventually twig that she is the problem rather than you. They probably sit in their office thinking, "Oh dear, it's the obasan on the phone again." They'll already have some idea about how much trouble she can be, but get some concrete evidence and then go to war. |

"Please put your complaint in writing and I will take care of it." Then just collect all the written complaints. See how thick the file folder can get.

That's only in Korea. Something to do with eating kimchi every day. Ironic that something like kimchi, that can cure everything from bird flu and SARS to cancer and AIDS but leaves you susceptible to something as innocuous as a fan. Tsk tsk. The Japanese are safe; kimuchi is not the same. |

I've had major problems with Asians' hypersensitivity to noise on multiple occasions over the past 2+ years. So I've been trying to think of a solution.
They sell soundproofing material on eBay. Supposedly it blocks out almost all noise. Has anyone ever thought of buying that and padding their walls with it, or at least building a small booth where they can strum on a guitar and talk on the phone? I'd definitely do that if it meant the end of neighbors complaining about the clinking of my spoons and chopsticks.
I realize I'm not going to change the mindsets of billions of East Asians, so I'd rather just get some soundproofing material and solve the problem that way -- but does the soundproofing material actually work? |

| I thought "fan death" only affected Koreans? Has it mutated and now affects other Nationalities? |

I knew several Japanese (not Zainichi Koreans) while studying at Yonsei University who believed in fan death. So it's definitely spreading. |
