Last week I went into my local New Beijing Oriental and there were actually hundreds of young people watching films and talking. I had a job interview and they told me that they would call me in for a second interview after I return from Urumqi. I thought that I would be teaching spoken English classes on the weekend with young adults, however the young lady who interviewed me told me that she does the hiring for teachers who work with young children and that there was anither woman in HR who interviewd people who would work with older students who wanted to go abroad. This seems like the new model to emulate for English Training Schools. It has to be a tremendous money maker. IELTS and SAT prep classes were offered as well as TOEFL and GRE courses. I don't know if foreign teachers are involved in this, but I will let you know. It hurt my feelings a little bit, when she asked me what size monkey suit I wore. HeHe. If this turns into a nice part-time job, I think that I will be able to buy a small apartment in the next year or two. |

I'd suspect some western and Chinese unis are in on some kind of a scam here. There're some Chinese unis that offer programs in China with an "extension" or whatever further studies abroad. Then, students at Chinese unis take up these proficiency exam courses and tests prior to their departures abroad. China's a hot market for education and there're loads of opportunities around. Needless to say that Chinese higher education cannot cater to the needs of its people.

With immigration tightly in check in the UK (or at least much more than in the US), it wouldn't be wild speculation to suggest that professors know certain students will not remain in the UK and letting them go home with a degree is to some extent sympathetic. |
I bet those students get their lovely degrees at departures level of the Heathrow Airport. Regarding that "sympathetic", I'd rephrase it as PLEASURE DOING BUSINESS WITH YOU.
Cheers and beers to TOEFL and IELTS money makers as well as to Chinese educational system that's found yet another way to make some extra buck

Can a Chinese employer see any differences in between Chinese or western degrees |
I probably wouldn't think that professors actually sell grades, but I could be wrong.
Actually, a Chinese employer cannot see the difference between the two degrees. However, a smart Chinese employer will look at the candidate's education in China. If they have an overseas degree but studied in a private or otherwise third-rate Chinese university, the foreign degree is worthless. |

don't mean to be disrespectful or anything like that but how many "smart employers" are around in this lovely country
i can tell you that my employer's hired a young chinese in late 20s out of a private business school in toronto (i know very well), and he's this young man as a canadian with a degree. even the ones with no high school can get in and graduate there. it's a freaking diploma.
YankeeDoodleDandy, that's a school i really want to know more about too and i hope you'll let us all know more on it later. a while back i've posted a thread on new oriental and wanted to know how many fts had worked there....looks like there're very few foreign teachers in and their "secrets" go on
cheers and beers to new oriental kids classes that foreigners teach .. i guess they prepare the kids for the SAT courses with chinese later |

where's joe? let me tease him in a bit...i'm a bit tired by those IELTS scores that come at 5 or 5.5 so often...to my knowledge, there's a quite a difference with respect to the students' proficiency in the language there..and, many of my students've noticed that too
now, i don't want to take a shot at the honorable examiners, but i just feel they've got little room to "manover around" there ... TOEFL seemingly provides a larger room as it looks with scores...however, too bad the room's apparently across the ocean and few get their chance to know who does it there or who sends it there..forgive me if i'm wrong..i don't eat much fish, but i hate to see my students at different levels getting similar scores...and, above all i hate them disappointed
cheers and beers to those proficiency exams that can't satisfy everyone |
