I'm bored out of my skull in the ROK and thought I would get a leg up on my house hunting in the ROC for September. I have looked on craigslist (way too expensive and not much to choose from) and tealit (hit and miss) and was just wondering if there are any sites (english or chinese) that I could search.

Any tips for a newbie when I arrive??

Any help would be appreciated.

OH

I know there's an organization called Tsuei Ma Ma that helps locate affordable housing in the Taipei area. I'm not in Taipei, so I haven't used them myself, but I have seen a rental list generated by them. The rents were lower than what's listed on tealit, but, of course, they're probably not luxury apartments.

One nice feature of Tsuei Ma Ma is that the housing list indicates whether or not a landlord will rent to foreigners. Knowing this before you go look at a place can be a real time and frustration saver.

I've heard that you need to be able to speak Chinese, or at least bring a Chinese speaker with you, when consulting them, but I'm not sure of this. Perhaps someone else on the forum can give more information.

Here are a couple of sites you might want to look at:

www.591.com.tw

www.hion.com.tw

I haven't looked at it in a while, but www.taiwanho.com might have some housing info. You could also google "taiwan housing." There are also expat mags that you can pick up in expat venues upon your arrival, such as FYI South, which covers living in the southern half of Taiwan.

Good luck!

the best asset is to find a new local friend who is willing to help look for, and haggle with, renters.
