The best answer is: A donde marcaste (, buey). Sometimes I reply with another question: Con quin quiere hablar? If they insist with the silly question, I go Si no sabe qu nmero marc, no puedo ayudarle. Chau. |
This happened to me all the time living in Acapulco, for some reason. It became a bit of a game with one particular woman who would call three times in a row, two or three times a week, but I would never give her the answer...usually ended in her calling me some foul name and hanging up. |

You could have given her that old standby, "Joe's [or Guy's] Bar & Grill". I guess you can't tell us here what foul name she called you. To fill in the "foul name" portion of my Mexican vocabulary, I've recently bought a hilarious illustrated book by the famous cartoon artist (and political activist) Rius called El libro de las MALAS PALABRAS. |

That's funny, MO. I can curse like a Vera Cruz streetwalker in Spanish, (learned it from my Secondarios and the movies!) but have no opportunity to do so. Unfortunately, in my social circle, it is not considered "ladylike" to use bad language in public.
There's a great book (now out of print, unfortunately) of something like 5000 ways to uses Mexico's most popular bad word, "chi..."
I can recommend Morralla del Calo Mexicano by Jesus Flores y Escalante, which I bought to help me decipher Jose Augustine.
It's full of filthy nasty stuff even I would never dream of saying out loud! |

Thanks for the recommendations, sweeney. Part of my problem is that I don't have a good "foul language" vocabulary in English either ! For now, I'll stick with my Rius book. It deals with "insultos, maldiciones, y palabrotas del uso diario en Amrica Latina", so I'll be prepared at least to understand what people might be mumbling at me the next time I find myself traveling south of the Mexican border. |
