Hi all,

Firstly, I read somewhere that inflation is at 27%. Is this true?

If so, how is it effecting you?

Thanks.

I think that y-to-y is just over 30%.

I am shopping more conscientiously, and when I eat out I eat out at places that are more reasonable. Rents have also gone up.

I dont find eating out to be too much more expensive. It was pretty cheap to begin with.
Shopping at Coop mart has become more expensive thats for sure. Some of those luxuries that I get have noticably jumped in price.
I have felt the pinch with fuel, not so much bec of my moto but bec the price of oil affects my business.
All in all, yes I have noticed the increase, but I still consider Vietnam a relatively cheap place to live.

The things is, we don't know when these huge increases will end.

We'll have to wait and see.
Rents have also gone up.
Can you give an example of this? By how much did they generally go up?

Thanks

The inflation thing has been going on since late last year.

Rents are up some, but eating out has gone up a lot.

Price increases wouldn't be so bad if the quality of life was improving, but this isn't quite the case.

People are leaving, but that's par for the course in VN.

Some grumbling from saigonesl:

p.s. it's 'affecting'

Some real examples;

I checked out an apartment in District 5 on Tran Hung Dao Street a bit more than a year and a half ago. It was $375 for the month. I checked there again about 2 months ago and the cheapest apartment was $600.

My old house's rent, in the space of a year jumped 23%.

A hotel I used to live in 2 years ago on Pham Ngu Lao went from $8 / night to $16 / night.

I also agree with Sigmoid, I wouldn't mind paying more if the standard of living had increased with it.

This is THE issue with me, now. If service and quality of products is sub-standard, I don't mind what I consider to be cheap and/or low cost.

Now I am noticing steady increases in price. Enough to make me more critical of quality of service and products, and the basics.

I don't know how long this inflation will go on. I am even considering options of leaving if it continues for another full year (12 months).

I still like it here, don't get me wrong.

Thanks guys for your input!

It seems like this inflation is somehow linked to the trade deficit. Perhaps this is the negative aspect of re-establishing trade with the US?
