Last year, we had a get together in the Zocalo...a crazy affair involving a lot of tequila, running foam-in-a-can street battles, fireworks, and a lot more I couldn't remember the next day.
Trying to come up with a good gathering locale for this year's festivities. Any suggestions?
Some pictures from last year's outing...

I wanna go! I'll even postpone my trip back to the US to see my parents, so I won't miss the festivities!! I'm not convinced about the foam business, but I adore fireworks!!! |

If you are in a colegio, you'll get Monday and Tuesday plus the weekend. Language schools and business classes will probably make you work on Monday.
I am getting paid. That's how it should be here.
Any plans for the 15th/16th anybody?
I'm going to go hear the grito and in the morning, watch the military parade. |

Every year on the night of September 15th, Mexico celebrates the main civil festivity in the calendar : El Grito de Independencia (The Cry of Independence). The President of the Republic comes out onto the main balcony of the National Palace overlooking the Zcalo or Main Plaza in Mexico City at exactly eleven o'clock and repeats El Grito, which begins: Mexicanos, vivan los heroes que nos dieron patria y libertad! (Mexicans, long live to the heroes that gave us country and freedom!); he continues naming the main Mexican heroes as the crowd roars Viva! after each name. At the end, he waves the Mexican flag from on high.
El Grito is echoed throughout the country as the highest government authorities in each area, Governors, Municipal Presidents, etc., repeat the call to arms, which sparked the Revolution of 1810 and led to the Independence of Mexico. And in foreign lands, Mexicans gather to listen to the local consul or community representative.
After El Grito, there are fireworks, music, food and festivities. On September 16th, there are big parades in the main cities throughout Mexico. |

Where are you teaching at? I can't imagine any school open on the 16th and most will be closed on the 15th, at least by midday. |

The fireworks display in Zcalo is spectacular, but...
What is this obsession in Mexico with firecrackers on every festival, important saint's day, etc? After being woken up at 5AM this Monday, after a 6 hour drive from Michoacn the previous day, I'm going kinda crazy. I don't want to rain on your parade, but I've always thought there was a hypocrasy between the peace and respect for others preached by the church and disrespect practised by it's members, in the name of the church |

I am renting a hotel room downtown. That way we can go and hear the grito and then go to sleep, wake up and be at the military parade. I have a room with a balcony and it should be a blast! |
