So this new exam that Cambridge has, is it worthwhile? According to them it's not a pass-fail exam, you just get a cert for each exam (there are three) that you take-.

Anyone taken it?

Opinions?

There is a link to the TKT site through The Guardian newspaper education site.

It has FAQs, explanations and egs for students and teachers. I have just spent an hour looking at it - there doesn't seem to be anything particularly nervewracking about it.

Uh . . . why would you take it?

I have the book - and it just looks like another opportunity for you to send your money to Cambridge. No offense - they already have enough of my money - but why would one take this test? No employer knows about it - or wants it?

Maybe better to get some sort of TEFL Cert or CELTA if you don't already have it? TKT looks pretty light weight.

think i'll do the TKT exam. have been teaching in china and britain for two years without any quals at all, so no harm in doing this TKT, pretty cheap, just turn up for the exam and can put it on the CV. when i turn up to summer schools in britain they'll know i can teach from my previous references, and they'll know i know the jargon from the TKT.

The impression I get from my co workers is that TKT is for L2 English teachers.

yeah it seems to have particular relevance for non-native teachers, but - from the sample questions - it has application for natives too, i think. asking the difference between TBL and PPP, between a relative and a reflexive pronoun: this stuff proves a modicum of ESL knowledge. it certainly doesn't compare to CELTA, but i dont have a spare 1,000 to spend right now, unfortunately. on the Cambridge site i couldn't see a restriction to non-native teachers. they just describe TKT as a potential precursor to CELTA.
