Thanks to all that responded to my troublesome situation. You guys are seriously on top of things. Maybe I'll be able to return the favor at some point.
I think what we're going to do in a week or two is lay it out on the line. Basically, they need to improve our transportation situation as promised or we'll give them 30 days notice. If they really cared, they would have offered a taxi on the first day, but instead the owner said "just talk to someone and try to find out what bus goes out there." We came the whole way from America to be treated like this on the first day? If we quit they are going to have a hell of a time explaining this to the parents and more importantly, finding new teachers. It's a small school with only one other English teacher. The school is in an extremely inconvenient location for anyone living in the city. It would look really bad for them if we left, so perhaps we have some leverage.
Sad thing is...I really like the kids and the job itself is pretty easy and stress free.
Regarding contract specifics - the contract only states that we will be working in Beijing, not at a specific location. We thought would be working at a different location where we rented an apartment and signed a lease. Then they told us the new location, we told them that we couldn't accept because it was too far and they said "there will be a school bus provided and it only takes 15 minutes." We actually have that in an email for what it's worth.
I heard that there was some issue with the validity of a contract that doesn't state exactly where you will be working. |

Dude do you honestly think you are the first teachers to get screwed by this school? Get real they tell every batch of new teachers the same crap then when they get there out come the excuses as to why the things you were promised never materialized.
So when you decide what you want to do DON"T consider the school or even the students. Losing face for the school? Who cares.
But you want to be a weenie and just got taken advantage of then why bother to post asking for advice.
Schools love those that don't stick up from themselves and allow mistreatment. They thrive on it.
SO if you can't stand up for yourself then you deserve whatever they throw at you.
And when they do rob you or throw you out or grab your passport and threaten you then you can only blame yourself.
You wouldn't be the first ft to run home with his tail tucked between his legs... |

when the bait and switch has been pulled, past emails are worth nothing. and dont let your affection for these kids allow you to be shafted. look out for you first, then worry about anyone else.
dont know if anyone else bothered to mention it (no time to read all the posts again), but if you hang in there and the problems you describe havent been sorted out to your satisfaction within 2-4 weeks, then pack up and leave. thats more than enough time for a school with good intentions to get things done. |

My point is that we can force them to give us what we want or we'll quit. I was just showing that I think we have leverage because THEY have a lot at stake. I didn't say we were not going to stand up for ourselves. I posted to get advice so that I can make an informed decision. You need to read carefully before jumping to conclusions! |
