Same question for me. I have searched different threads, and just want the latest news.

Also, the contract they sent me has the pay divided- part as salary, and part as an "expense allowance". Why would they do this?

This is quite savvy on their part and you should appreciate it. Any moneys deemed to be "allowance", "living allowance", etc., etc., that are not denominated as "income" pass tax-free in the PRC.
