So like the title says, I'm new here (arrived last night). I'm going to do the ITTO course to get a certificate (I taught in damascus many years ago, but never got certified). I'm not really concerned about finding a job or a place to live, for now I have that stuff sorted. Mostly I'm wondering what people can recommend regarding the city. Of course, I have a guide book, but always feel coerced when reading those, and I always prefer the human touch. Any suggestions of places to eat, things to do, bookstores, cafes, parks, I dunno, anything that strikes your fancy as something interesting would be appreciated.

cheers

Buy the Publico newspaper tomorrow morning ($7). It will include the Ocio supliment that will tell you about what's going on in town.

The Mariachi Festival began today and the parade is on Saturday (Av. 16 de septiembre) at 4pm.

Guadalajara has just about anything you'd want to do it is just a matter of finding it. If you're staying near the school there are plenty of restaurants near the centro. There is a cool cuban dancing bar that I went to with a few friends from ITTO called La Mutualista. The good bar district where they have live music and all sorts of bars is called Calle Dos. If you have a chance to get out of town, the town of Tequila is nearby and you can tour the agave fields and tequila factories... it wasn't that expensive. Tlaquepaque is where the good street market is... It is FAR from ITTO tho... on the other side of the city. Hope this helps. If you have any specific questions just send them to me. If Rodolfo is still at ITTO tell him Derrick (July 2007) says hello.

thanks for the tips- do you remember what street la mutualista was on, and where exactly is calle dos? I mean, which direction from ITTO? I've become pretty familiar with the stretch along avenida juarez, and found a decent reggae place "up" from juarez (along the promenade by 16 Sept). I believe rodolfo is still there (classes start on monday) but will say hello for you.

cheers,

J

If I remember correctly, La Mutualista is on Madero St which I think ITTO is on as well. If you walk outside the school (if you are inside) and go left, it is a couple blocks from the school. You would have to take a taxi to calle dos. You might be able to take the metro but i'm not sure. I just took a taxi and couldn't tell you exactly where it is. During the day La Mutualista is unrecognizable but if you walk by at night, what looked like an empty building is packed full of people. Oh... the Japanese restaurant beside the school is awesome too.

No, you cannot reach Calle 2 by the subway. I'm sure that there must be a bus that goes to Calle 2 (a bus that goes to Belenes). The easy way is to take a taxi. Here's the website.

There are many bars in the historical district and on Avenida Vallarta, towards Avenida Chapulpec and near Centro Magno.

More info on bars and clubs in Guadalajara. Antro is a slang word for club.

And if you're into theatre, check this http://www.teatrodiana.com/index2.html

And remember, Avenida Vallarta (the same as Avenida Juarez) is closed on sundays for la Via Recreativa, a morning in which people can ride their bikes and skate along this avenue. I heard that you can borrow a bike in situ.

For concerts, check Auditorio Telmex, click on "eventos". MTV Latino Awards is taking place in this venue in October. For some strange reason it's not listed yet, gossiping suggests that U2 will be performing that night.

Anyway, Guadalajara has a bit of everything. Enjoy it.
