I am certainly interested in the social side of forming an association and seeing if the professional side develops as a result of this. It is too ambitious to try to do both from the get go, IMO.

I will also be here for the long haul, so it would be beneficial for me and my wife to get involved. My wife is Indonesian, and I think it would be good for her to meet up with other Indonesian ladies who are married to expats - they can swap horror stories of how disgusting we are Very Happy

We need to find out who is interested, meet for a beer and a chat, and hammer out some ideas. I am certainly interested in gettig together to work on sports events, social events, hiking trips etc. We have all done many things and seen many places during our time here. It would be great if we could all share our experiences and advice with each other.

With the hope that people will not reply , "What, another group of teachers getting drunk?", I would like to express my interest in Paul's idea of meeting up socially.

I feel that it would be a great opportunity to learn from each other (not grammar I sincerely hope), our experiences, difficulties, success stories (or not), suggestions for entertainment, and general networking/socializing. This may seem a weird thing to request if you are already sharing a house with 15 EF employees, but there are many teachers who are working in schools that do not have a large expat contingent (or a socially agreeable one).

Yes, it will all start with a beer/meal as that seems the easiest way to get together and get started.

If this happens, it'll be a bit like a mix between a flash mob and an unmasked ball. Will we retain our secret identities by referring to ourselves in the third person and hoping we don't slip up? If anybody "comes out", will his or her appearance match those mental pictures we have built up over the years? For example Beefer be on the stocky side with a bright red face? And where would it be? Would Team Papua and Henry Cowell frequent the same type of establishment?

Of course, if anybody announces that he earns US$3000 per month in Korea, the cat will be out of the bag.....

But I think you have brought up a very good point.... So... the 1,000,000 Rupiah question is... can people on this forum and elsewhere get together and have a good time... or do they only want to "play here...?

In principle, I like the idea of an English teachers' association. However, I don't have the time or proximity to Jakarta to attend social gatherings or other face-to-face events. Also, there are many times when I prefer to keep my identity anonymous, for various, legitimate reasons.
I'm sure there are many more like me - people who would find an association an important support network, who are prepared to help out in some way, but who don't want to, or can't, meet up.
Look forward to more on this discussion and, maybe, a useful and practical outcome.

I just moved to Jakarta and it's not the easiest place to meet people. I'd love to meet up with some other teachers for a beer.

Sounds a good idea to me. One thing that worries me about going abroad is the lack of a game of football. TP, you mention sports before. Does this include football?

Somewhat easier to organise is a game of tennis. Anyone play?

I am extremely happy that there is such attention to detail on this fine forum.
Did I see reference to a hangover? These are, of course, very easy to become victim to here in Indonesia. This is due to the chemicals used to preserve the beer�s shelf life. The beer really is quite atrocious in my humble opinion. This is why my tipple of choice is Mr. Walkers Jonnie Red.
I feel that Mr. Walker was also a Genius Jonnie.

So, where and when will this drinking and frolicking take place?

Don't worry, I hadn't even heard of modals till 6 months ago. Hell, firefox doesn't even know modals exist as it tells me there's no such word.

I'm still in the process of making a decision about going there. Beer is very important to me (and my decision). Hangovers not so; I don't entertain them. Surely, though, there's some decent imported beer on the menu, no?
