I had a uni student sitting in a group of girls, real feminine face with a hair clip, then I call his name and realize she's a guy. Talk about embarassing moments. Luckily he didn't seem to notice when I said, " You girls in the back"!

I know you're just curious about these sort of things, but will anyone really have a good answer to this? This type of curiosity in Japan only leads to more questions that rarely becomes a logical answer. Anyhow, I think it's a good thing that people in Japan are this open to sexuality. Typical Americans, on the other hand, will go nuts over a boy playing with dolls. "Oh God, Oh No! He's gay, he won't be able to reproduce, give him Incredible Hulk immediately!" ... ummm right. This is one of the reasons why so many boys can't get in touch with their feminine side and then become confused over why they can't understand girls; It all starts at childhood. Going the whole distance with make-up, hair, dress, and teaching the child the personality of a little girl all at once... that's a little different then sprinkling in a little bit of femininity once in awhile.

I think there is a difference with understanding who you are (both male and female parts) and becoming a bit of a Boy George or something. I haven't seen anyone go nuts over someone playing with dolls, but cross dressing, where the parents are doing it....

The androgenous look has been in vogue for some time here, and no wonder with some bodies looking almost identical; slim, hairless, etc.
It is just different, and you have to allow people their differences. Whether you have to like it and copy it is another story...

This thread took me by surprise, because I don't remember ever seeing crossdressed kids. Then again, maybe every kid I ever taught was crossdressed and I was oblivious.

The one exception is when my wife asked about getting pink infant clothes for our son. I understand that wearing something pink won't hurt him, but I still had to ask why. She dropped it right there without any explanation and never asked again. She loves buying little girl clothes for her friend's daughter, so I think she just wanted to dabble in both fashions.
