I am rather new at this and was wondering if anyone could help... I am currently studying for my CELTA and am looking to get a job teaching in Japan sometime this year. I have a degree but am only 21, and have noticed that some jobs specify applicants to be over 24. Is this common? Also wondering if anyone has any advice of where to go for a good first job. I don't want to live in Tokyo or a big city, but not too rural (somewhere near a beach?)
Any suggestions or tips would be much appreciated.

If you have a degree you will qualify for a work visa. As most university graduates are about 24 and the average age of teachers working at the big language schools is 26-27, a 21-year-old is considered to be on the young side to be teaching English. More over there are no restrictions on posting age/nationality/gender limits on many ads in japan.

I dont think its common to limit the age they will hire from, but it does happen. My advice is just to knock on more doors. As long as you have a degree (and a CELTA) you will be in the running for jobs.

As for where to look for a job that could include a number or places as there are a lot of beaches and coastal areas in Japan (Yokohama? Kochi? Kobe, Fukuoka?) so it depends on what you are looking for. Smaller cities have foreign populations but are close to the sea as well.

A big question also is where you will be applying from- if you go through the big schools you can apply to be sent to a place but there are no guarantees as they will only send you there if there is an opening. Often times you have to settle for second best and then hope for a transfer after you have got settled.

Are you two related? Both of your names end the same way.
