Hello Forum,
I am completely new here and I would appreciate some comments about a salary I have just been offered.

The intervewer seemed reasonable and fare and I have no complaints about him whatsoever.

The college I applied for has offered me 15000 SAR a month with free accomadation and travel expenses.

I would appreciate any input concerning if this is an average, low, or high salary.

Thank You

Paul

Who's the employer?

Be careful to see if it's legit.

Ouch!!!

As to your question, 15000SR is a very good salary for a new teacher. I would say it's well above average in Saudi third level institutions.

As others have said, however, ask lots of questions and do a 'background check' on your prospective employers. Make sure you have a detailed contract - preferably one you get to see before you go to KSA, if at all possible - before committing yourself.

On the surface an offer of 15,000 SAR gross is an interesting offer.

This is where the caveat, but........ comes in.

Check your contract carefully to see what items you will have to pay for vs what the new company pays for.

1. Airfares need to be specified carefully.
2. Who pays for the visas and medical exam?
3. Utilities, i.e. electric, water, and misc are significant expenses. Who pays?
4. The place you will stay, your or them?
5. Transportation allowance. Do you have one for daily trips?
6. Check your holidays, i.e how many and are they paid?
7. Most important, verify your work week hours, anything beyond 25 is too much.
8. Does your contract have provisions for overtime pay?
9. Collateral assignments, as in what are your responsibilities beyond teaching?

This is just a few of the factors which influence whether or not you have a good deal.

I suppose the word 'significant' is open to interpretation, but I really don't think having to pay your own bills is a major factor. I have never had to pay more than about 50SR a month, except perhaps in the hieght of summer when the AC is on 24 hours a day.

The OP said that accomodation was included. He should, however, make careful enquires as to the nature of said accommodation, particularly whether or not he will have to share.

Obviously it's nice to have the employer foot these bills, but again, I don't think this one-off expense - hefty though it can be - if a major factor in weighing up a job offer.

In the evirons of PMU-land an average elecrtic bill runs between 250 to 350 SAR/ month.

Bear in mind visas and Iqamas are not a one time thing. A reputable company will pay these charges.

Also remember, do you have to chase down the items or will the company handle it? Difference: Significant travel costs.

A place with a roomy is like going back to the college dorm. An adult deserves privacy and a place of their own.

15,000 is very good.

Just make sure that [single] accomodation and tickets are explicitly mentioned in the contract as part of the package.

Also check if they will cover visa expenses, and offer you medical insurance. You never know when that will come handy. Anyway, these 2 items are not that much, and are basically one-off expenses. Housing and tickets are essential.

Until he names the college it's a fairly meaningless discussion

You have to look at the whole package and not just the numbers on that monthly payslip. If you have a bad employer in KSA your life can be VERY difficult.

Things to watch specially :-
1. Accommodation - is it shared ?
2. Iqama and visa - who pays ?
3. Tickets - what do you get ?
4. Leave - when and how much ?
5. Salary - is it opaid regularly withouit mysterious deductions ?
6. Not least - who will I be teaching, where and with what ?
