Hello,

I am a 23-year-old college grad (journalism) living in Madison, Wis. My serious girlfriend (political science) and I want to teach English in Morocco. I have a special connection to Morocco because my mother was born there and lived there until she was in her 20s, before coming to America. I have family in Fes and Casablanca and have visited Morocco probably half a dozen times in my life.

Ive tried researching teaching abroad on the Internet, but frankly, the amount of information available is overwhelming. What are some good sites or resources (other than this one) that are reliable and informative regarding teach English abroad (specifically in Morocco)?

Also, what is the conventional wisdom regarding certification? The Midwest Teacher Training Program, http://www.mttp.com, based here in Madison, offers a 5-week class for $2,600 that includes teach actual students in person. Sites on the Internet offer certification and promise guaranteed placement for $1,000. Seems too good to be true in my opinion.

Basically, I know I want to teach English in Morocco for one or two years, but I dont know where to start. Any help, advice, or direction anyone can provide is much appreciated.

Thanks,
Sam

There's a company called ALC in Meknes that takes on Americans & I've had two friends that worked there; sounded quite good although they take ages with the visa process so you may find yourself going to Spain for the odd weekend to extend your time!

There's a few in Rabat & Casa that seem OK, I think ALC has an office there too!

About the ALCs (American Language Centers) you could start with this site: http://aca.org.ma/
There's also the British Council in Rabat and Amideast, both of which have websites. Those are the most reputable EFL outfits in Morocco and there have been lots of postings on this site about their pluses and minuses.
In terms of qualifications, you need at least a BA or more to get a work permit to teach here. The rest varies.

Good luck
