Yup, that's obvious.

You're from an English speaking country, yes? I doubt that Japan is more unsafe than where you're coming from

See above. You really have never been to Japan!

and if you don't worry about it at home, why worry about it in Japan?

Now, there's a presumption and a half!

sexual harassment is an issue in every country, and I've never been to Japan, but the most sensible answer is this: It can happen anywhere, and at anytime.

I feel these two statements go together hand in hand. Anywhere, anytime, including this discussion forum.

Glenski,

oh, put a sock in it will ya? (I hope I got it right, I'm not accustomed to speaking like this)

yes it can happen on this forum too....I suppose you want to press charges against me? Or better yet have KarenMarie press charges?

I thought that uptight Americans spending time in Japan would loosen up a bit....apparently not !

I'll probably be called prejudiced now.....but notice I didnt use the Y-word Smile

cheers

Dear avahanian,
Gee, I think it's wonderful that your consciousness is so advanced that you can refer to yourself in what most of us would consider to be an insulting manner.

"cheers

avahanian the wog"

Now, do you think you could raise that consciousness of yours just a tad more - to encompass the fact that probably not everyone else in the world is as enlightened as you are?

Regards,
John

Hi John,

I appreciate self-deprecating humour, that's all. Smile

But for people who take things too seriously, yes, it could be considered insulting.

Anyway you look it, all of us are either wogs, pakis, japs, wops, etc....we all came from somewhere and it's funny to make jokes about it and not start WW3 just because someone calls us a name.

cheers

Avahanian,

I will lighten up when people like you stop writing such remarks.

Do you really think your statements are insightful? Constructive? Useful? They are none of those things.

You have admitted you have never worked in Japan, yet you continue to fill the discussion forum with advice on it. How can you profess to be a pundit in these matters? You're not even an amateur. A bigger question in my mind is, why do you bother to post such "advice" when you have no basis for giving it?

Being self-deprecating saves us the trouble of looking bad by calling you a name. Just don't use those pejoratives on others, ok?

Indeed....though I have a difficult time believing this. You have about as much chance of lightening up as a Nazi concentration camp officer....hence, I think the chances of this happening are quite slim unfortunately!

Well, nobody's perfect Smile

And yes, even you are entitled to your own opinion.

The only thing I profess is being true to myself, and not pretending to be so much better than everyone else. This is something you should learn.

In your last post you claimed that I only had teaching experience in Spain. You are woefully mistaken, I have taught Japanese students before (just not in Japan).

But I'm not going to type my life story here...you know your business and I know mine....your business is being a condescending, manipulative control freak.

Yes...perhaps you should take a course....called "Sense of Humour 101".

And by the way - you do not intimidate me, I have as much right to participate in these forums as anyone else.

cheers

My sentiments exactly....I would have quit long ago but Glenski keeps opening his mouth!

I'd rather not argue but Glenski thinks he is King of the Japan message board.....someone has to knock him off his high horse!

From his high horse he has helped a lot of people on this and other forums. Even glenski's long term sparring partners have a bit of respect for him. When you come here I promise that you will see a lot of things the way he does. Of course you won't agree on everything, but that's why forums are helpful.

Glenski answers a lot of posts very politely and respectfully. Many of these posts I and others distance ourselves from for fear of hammering the individual posters for insulting our intelligence. Yet everytime Glenski tries his best to answer the questions. Yes sometimes he becomes rude, but it is usually after the person challenges the advice he gives. I don't know about you avhanarian, but when I give advice and the person I give it to gets pissy because they don't like my advice then I tend to get a little pissy too.

If you come to these boards just to antagonize then I suggest you visit the China off topic forum. You will find just the kind of excitement you crave.

Avahanian

what happened to your recent job interview you were so proudly telling us about with ECC or somewhere? For someone not even in Japan or could not even get through the interview stage it speaks volumes.

Get knocked back or fell through did it? Please do tell.

Avahanian,
I wouldn't even attempt to try intimidating you. Just stating the facts.

Woefully mistaken? Gee, that cuts me right to the quick. Forgive me for not remembering something so insignificant. Teaching Japanese students outside Japan is nothing like teaching them IN Japan, and you should realize that trying to give advice on Japan based on such puny experience is hardly justification.

Hey, buddy, it was you that contacted me privately about trying to co-author a book based on the vast material I had compiled and distribute here! So, I figure you must've taken me for some kind of knowledgeable person. The fact that you provided practically zero references, that your writing is chock full of grammatical errors despite being a journalism major, and that you thought I needed you to do the writing was really sad.

Yes, you do. However, your recent posts have been obvious sexual harassment (although childish at best). You do NOT have that right.

Some of your other posts of late have tried to provide information on teaching or living in Japan. You do NOT have the right to do so if you have never even lived or worked here and know next to nothing about the question. This is the main reason I respond to many of your posts.

Guys,

Please take your drama off the forum. It's hardly constructive or useful to anyone to read you two tearing into one another. Hey, where's that moderator, anyway...

Dear ToykoLiz,

"Hey, where's that moderator, anyway"

You called? The problem has been addressed and, one hopes, resolved.
You should see no more of this "drama" on this forum.

Paladin

KarenMarie, your concerns aren't unjustified, but the way you presented them comes across as confrontationally untrusting. An employer would quickly get the impression that you'd scrutinize its every move and treat it with the presumption of guilt, and that you'd squawk incessantly and not consider meeting the company halfway. That's not to say that grievances shouldn't be aired (companies are usually realistic enough to expect a certain amount of this), but nobody wants to hire a picket hobbyist. If you follow the suggested modifications, you'll be fine.
