Please be warned that the Winner is anything but winning for teachers. The director knows nothing about education, does not respect or appreciate his teachers, cannot be trusted and will not fulfill his part of the contract. He quotes the salary in US dollars, but when it is actually calculated into or out of SDG (Sudanese pounds) several hundred dollars go missing. The same happened with my flight reimbursement. The exchange rate will always work to his advantage. In addition, the school has not been maintained and has no support staff, so nothing works and no one really cares or understands your frustration. The director cannot be civil for more than 5 minutes and frequently yells at his employees in the public areas of the school where students are trying to have classes. In the two years that the school has been in existence, there have been only two teachers who have stayed to complete their contract terms. Most have left within 4-5 months. When I resigned after four weeks of hell, he threatened to not give my passport to me until I was at the airport and said I had to leave the country within 72 hours. When I packed up my things to move out, he told the guard to lock me in and not let me leave until he arrived at the school. He is all about power and trying to exert it wherever and with whomever he can.
The school is located far from anything of interest, except the Nile. Consequently, you have to take expensive transportation to the markets, restaurants, etc. The accommodation is actually a room with air-con on the third floor of the school. There is a refrigerator on the third floor, but the kitchen is on the first. Since I was warned at the outset not to leave food downstairs or it would be gone, it means keeping your food upstairs and dragging it downstairs to cook. Since there are classes going on during the day and evening, you never have privacy nor can you dress as you wish to cook or use the space. The shared lounge area is not air conditioned and therefore not at all comfortable as the temperature on the third floor is suffocating. Since the salary is not enough to be able to afford to live anyplace decent in the city, it is quite an impossible situation. Its not possible to live there long-term, but you wont be able to afford a flat elsewhere.
I feel obligated to inform people of the real truth because I certainly wish someone would have spared me this disappointment. After travelling a long distance with many hopes of a good teaching experience, it is very sad to end up in this situation. Oddly enough, I had one of the best teaching experiences ever. My students were just the most amazing young men and eager learners I have ever encountered. It is really unfortunate that the person in charge is the most unscrupulous man I have ever met. Please understand my motivation in writing is to save other colleagues from this very negative experience. |
