Ok, So I've been in Taiwan for 2 months and in a house where I'm "sharing" a DSL connection with my landlord. This service is part of my rental agreement. However, my landlord is a tighta** and has cut me down to 700kb/s which means no downloading anything and I'm even having trouble using popular websites.
Needless to say I've had enough I mean this is 2008 not 1998, so I shall be getting my own internet.
The boyfriend is talking about wireless from FarEastone (690NT a month) but they can't garuntee a speed because its wireless and I just have my doubts that I will be able to download what and how much I want.
Then he mentioned a landline for about 500NT a month.
What I am looking for is some info on what you are all using? What is best? Fastest? Cheapest? IS this FarEasTone wireless service any good?
I live in TienMu if that info helps.
Thanks for your help.

Internet is pretty cheap and fast here, so just spend the money and enjoy the service.
However, make sure you check the real speeds that available in your area. HiNet (for example) will let you sign up for a kick ass speed but what they won't tell you whether the speed you have purchased is actually possible where you live - UNLESS YOU DIRECTLY ASK THEM. So, check the available speeds in your area before signing up for the best plan. I'd guess that Tienmu has good speeds on offer (as there are loads of rich people living there!).
When the guy comes to install it, get him to do a speed test. That shows them you mean business, and it will also encourage him to allocate the best speed he can (he will go online and connect to HiNet via his notebook & change a few things for you).
I went for the 8M/640K plan and I rarely get the speeds I am paying for. It's about NT$1,000 a month, I think. The landline is included.
I had a wireless router at home but it broke (I purchased it myself). No plans to replace it. It was slowing me down. |

BTW I forgot to mention...........
Dave's ESL is FANTASTIC for teaching, job hunting and the general low down on Taiwan.
However, once you get here you should also check out this site: Forumosa. http://forumosa.com/taiwan/index.php
It will answer many of your local and specific Taiwan questions and needs. You will also discover what the locals here are talking and thinking about. Your internet question (for example) would be best answered by someone like irushstu in the technology forum. The man is a God.
For you job speculators out there - don't try to replace Dave's with Forumosa. They are completely different and the average crowd at Forumosa are not interested in answering the type of stuff we get to ponder here on Dave's ESL.
I hope this helps. |
