It would depend on the company event. It's true, generally speaking Japanese people won't bring their better halves (or not), but that doesn't always mean you can't. It is better to ask first though.

Whether it's the first scheduled event or not doesn't matter, it really depends on your company. For that matter, your boyfriend may not always bee interested in coming along.

As to the reference to bringing same sex partners along, it probably wouldn't be a good idea in Japan. Things are still pretty conservative here, and many Japanese wouldn't accept it. I have seen some people here, similar to a neighboring country, where homosexuality is acknowledged as a 'foreign problem'. Not the most enlightening of outlooks.

Exactly what I was thinking. If your boyfriend happens to live with you in Japan, that's your business. I knew plenty of couples who lived in similar arrangements.

It was my understanding that significant others weren't invited to social events. There were a few times, however, that social invitations from my students were extended to my wife too, and they got pretty indignant and insistent when I said she wouldn't be able to attend. I took it as quite intrusive.

Students do like to do that sometimes, and I would ask if they are bringing their spouses. If they are bringing them, you might want to consider bringing your wife (assuming she feels comfortable with it).

There was no mention of their spouses, and I didn't get the empression they'd be coming too. I should have asked if they were bringing their wives.

Never hurts to ask, though sometimes you won't get a straight answer.

So you're earning 380,000Y a month? Who is that with, if I may ask - sounds like a pretty fantastic deal!
